PARRISH STREET IN DURHAM NORTH CAROLINA
Black Wall Street is a term that describes historic Parrish Street, a four block area in downtown Durham where African-American enterprise thrived in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The term came into use in the 1950s and references the famous financial district in New York City. During the early 1900s, similar black business districts developed in other cities, but Durham’s earned a national reputation as “The Capital of the Black Middle Class”
In response to Reconstruction in the late 1800s, southern states passed Jim Crow laws to enforce segregation and limit the opportunities of African Americans. While some African Americans left the South, others chose to stay, determined to thrive. In Durham, entrepreneurs like John Merrick and Charles Spauldingemerged as pioneers of black enterprise, paving the way for Durham's Black Wall Street
Many businesses were segregated in the early 1900s, and Parrish Street became a center of commerce for the African-American community with a diverse range of black-owned businesses. The growth of black enterprise was anchored by North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company(first formed in 1898 by John Merrick and a group of investors; later moved to Parrish Street in 1906) and Mechanics and Farmers Bank(founded in 1907 by Richard Fitzgerald and eight businessmen). Other businesses in the district included the Bull City Drug Store Company; several newspapers and periodicals; professional practices including physicians, lawyers, and dentists; as well as skilled workers including a barber, tailor, and printer
As a result of the economic opportunity and flourishing black community, Durham's African-American population grew rapidly between 1890 and 1910 and the valuation of black property skyrocketed [1]. Parrish Street neighbored Hayti, a growing African-American residential and business area, and together the two areas became a center for black life
Due to financial and social barriers, the prosperity of Black Wall Street did not distribute equally among the black population, and many continued to work as laborers at factories and farms. In addition, smaller black-owned businesses struggled to find the success of larger organizations like North Carolina Mutual. However, Booker T. Washington observed that even lower class blacks had a higher quality of life compared to other communities [
Durham's Black Wall Street prospered during the first half of the twentieth century until a combination of urban sprawl and the Civil Rights Movement led to desegregation of black and white business districts.
Steam Powered 1800s Circular Sawmill Cutting OAK Logs into 22 inch wide boards with Surprize Ending
This is another video of me sawing up some 36 to 44 inch diameter Red Oak and White Oak Logs on the Steam Powered Sawmill at the Stephenson County Antique Engine Club's 43rd Annual Threshing Show August 3rd 4th & 5th 2012 at the Stephenson County Fairgrounds in Freeport Illinois.
Starting out with bigger diameter logs like that, the 52 inch diameter blade can't reach all the way through, so you cut as far as you can on one side and then grab the Cant Hooks and roll the log down on the flat so it is a little shorter for the next series of cuts, and eventually you get a squared up log called a 'Cant'. With a 52 inch blade some might think you would be able to cut 26 inch wide boards, but due to the large diameter flange washer and nut holding the blade on the arbor, 22 inch is the maximum width for the lumber coming off it, though most log owners have me cut them to 12 inch and narrower so they can run them through their planers.
Along with the Red Oak and White Oak logs shown in this video, we also cut a wide variety of other species of Hardwoods and softwoods , including Walnut, Cherry, Pine, Cedar, Hickory, Ash, Sycamore, Maple, Willow, Cottonwood, Box Elder, Mulberry, Birch, and others. One year I took in a small 10 inch diameter 'log' from my 50 plus year old Lilac bush/tree just to see what the boards would look like with the purple streaks running through them. Years ago, when my Dad still ran the mill, he always made a point of running at least one watermellon through the mill each year and passing the slices out among the eager croud of spectators. I may have to try doing that myself one of these years.
While I haven't tried any actual 'Quarter Sawing' yet, even when you start out flat sawing or rift sawing, you still end up with some nice Quarter Sawn boards once you get to the center of the log. End up with a variety of cathedral grain, straight grain, etc., as you make your way through the log.

The Steam Engine is a Port Huron, and the Sawmill appears to pieced together from a few different brands with the majority of it being a late 1800's Garr Scott with Friction Drive for the carriage feed, and the old style Babbitt Bearings where the newer mills had changed over to ball or cone roller bearings.
I did leave one Sawmill Blooper in it showing one of the boards catching on the carriage and getting pulled back towards me on the return pass just to show that you have to keep your gaurd up and watch what you're doing when working with this old equipment.
When the day was over, I got a visit from a pair of Macaws, one of which decided to 'go on safari' and crawl around on the mill checking things out.
I hope to be posting some more videos of the mill from this year which my helpers shot for me once they get me a copy of the disc they burned from their video camera. This video was shot from my little point and shoot digital camera set to video.
