Winter Swamp Bushwhacking at Chub Sandhill Natural Area Preserve in Sussex County, Virginia
The Chub Sandhill Natural Area Preserve is a small property managed by the Virginia Dept. of Conservation and Recreation. The preserve is found along the banks of the Nottoway River in southern Sussex County, on the coastal plain of southeast Virginia. This land is mainly a mixed hardwood and pine bottomland swamp environment. Many fire dependent species of trees and plants are managed here. In the past, sand was mined from several spots inside what is now the preserve. This type of ecosystem was once widespread in the eastern Virginia lowlands, but it is under increasing threat in modern times and few forest of this type remain. ~NOTE~ This area is a very delicate ecosystem. When going off trail, one should exercise extreme care in moving through the forest to limit one's impact on the plants and animals living in the area. Do not allow dogs to roam free or to dig. Do not ride horses or bikes in these areas as they are particularly damaging to the ground. Always practice the principles of Leave No Trace but be even more aware when visiting our precious and delicate Natural Area Preserves.
