Die Stadt Antakya wurde in der Antike Antiochia genannt und wegen ihrer Schönheit Königin des Orients. Vieles hat sich im heutigen Stadtbild verändert. Die Döner-Gaststätten und zahlreichen Verkaufsstände lassen das typisch türkische Flair erkennen. Auf dem Basar kann man in den traditionellen Werkstätten die Weber mit ihren Handwebstühlen, die Gold- und Silberschmiede, Tuchmacher, Schneider und Schuhmacher bei der Arbeit beobachten. Im Archäologischen Museum findet man eine beeindruckende Sammlung von Mosaiken, die aus der römischen Epoche stammen und in den Villen der reichen Bürger gefunden wurden. In einer geheimen Grotte östlich der Stadt versammelte der Apostel Petrus die von Verfolgung geplagten Christen. Die Anhänger Jesu, die sich hier in der St. Petrus-Grotte versammelten, nannten sich erstmals Christen, eine Bezeichnung, die bis heute gilt. Auf Grund der Bedeutung für die Christenheit wurde die St. Petrus-Grotte vom Papst heilig gesprochen.
