  • 3. Khardung La Ladakh
    Khardung La is a mountain pass in the Ladakh region of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. The local pronunciation is Khardong La or Khardzong La but, as with most names in Ladakh, the romanised spelling varies. The pass on the Ladakh Range is north of Leh and is the gateway to the Shyok and Nubra valleys. The Siachen Glacier lies part way up the latter valley. Built in 1976, it was opened to public motor vehicles in 1988. Maintained by the Border Roads Organisation, the pass is strategically important to India as it is used to carry supplies to the Siachen Glacier. The elevation of Khardung La is 5,359 m . Local summit signs and dozens of stores selling shirts in Leh incorrectly claim that its elevation is in the vicinity of 5,602 m and that it is the world's highest motorable pass. Kh...

    Tanglang La, elevation 5,328 metres , is a high mountain pass in Ladakh region of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. As of August 2014, the Leh-Manali highway leading south from Upshi to Tanglang La is paved, with the exception of a very short unpaved section just north of the pass. The pass itself is paved. On ascending the pass from Moore plains the road is well paved too with occasional streams crossing. The elevation in metres, which is taken from a local sign, is in agreement with SRTM data. The sign claims 17,582 feet, which would be 5,358 metres, and claims to be the world’s second highest motorable pass. The claim is no longer accurate however, and is actually the 12th highest motorable pass.

    Fotu La or Fatu La is a mountain pass on the Srinagar-Leh highway in the Himalayas zaskar Range in India. At an elevation of 4,108 metres , it is the highest point on the highway, surpassing the famed Zoji La. Fotu La is one of two high mountain passes between Leh and Kargil, the other being Namika La.Moving eastwards, the highway begins to descend towards the Lamayuru after Fotu La. There is a Prasar Bharati television relay station serving Lamayuru located on the pass.

    Zoji La Tunnel is a 14.2 km long road tunnel under Zoji La pass on the Himalayas between Sonmarg and Dras town of Kargil district of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, currently under construction. The tunnel along with 6.5 km long Z-Morh Tunnel, will ensure year-long road connectivity between Srinagar and Leh which currently remains closed for about seven months due to heavy snowfall on the Zoji La pass which is situated at an altitude of 3,528 m on Srinagar-Kargil-Leh highway. Zoji La is 15 km from Sonamarg and provides a vital link with Drass and Kargil in Ladakh but remains closed during winters.     The Chang La is a high mountain pass in Ladakh, India. It is claimed to be the second highest motorable road in the world . Chang La is approached from Leh via Kharu and Sekti village by an asphalt road. The climb is very steep and requires a careful drive. The stretch of 10-15 km road on either side from Chang la is loose dirt and slush.During the summer months specifically the tourist season, small streams appear across the road, making the climb a challenge for the bikers. The descent from Chang La towards Tangtse or Darbuk is again very steep. As per the medics, it is advisable to not stay at the top for more than 20-25 mins as it could be detrimental to health owing to its high altitude.
