Boreal forest makes up most of the biome in Kainuu. The forest in Kainuu mostly consists of birches, pines and spruces. Kajaani is a town and municipality in Finland. It is the center and capital of the Kainuu region. It is located southeast of Oulujärvi , which drains to the Gulf of Bothnia along the Oulujoki . It succumbed to Russian forces during the Greater Wrath of the 18th century, who ruined the Kajaani Castle in 1716. Hiidenportti National Park is a national park in Sotkamo in the Kainuu region of Finland. Hiidenportti National Park was established in 1982 to preserve the region's wilderness. A mosaic mix of mires and dry forests is typical landscape in this national park. The park covers 45 square kilometres . Two thirds of the area is coniferous forest. The near-natural state forests are 100–150 years old on average. The last loggings were made in the beginning of the 20th century. The most well-known attraction of the park is the Hiidenportti gulley with vertical cliffs.

Kolovesi National Park is a national park in the Etelä-Savo region of Finland. It was established in 1990 and covers 23 km2 . It protects e.g. the habitat of the critically endangered Saimaa Ringed Seal. Typical of the rugged scenery of Kolovesi, formed by the ice age, are craggy cliffs rising from the water. Cave paintings have been discovered in the area.

Sammallahdenmäki is a Bronze age burial site in Finland in Rauma. It was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1999, and includes 36 granite burial cairns dating back more than 3,000 years, to 1,500 to 500 BC. It is located on a hill in a remote area off the road between Tampere and Rauma. Originally, it was near the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia, but the land has risen so it is now 15 kilometers from the sea. It is one of the most important Bronze Age sites in Fennoscandia. Four of the cairns were excavated by archaeologist Volter Högman in 1891, including Kirkonlaattia , an unusual rectangular cairn covering 16 x 19 metres with a flat top, and Huilun pitkä raunio , which is surrounded by an ancient stone wall.

This summer I was determined to fulfill one of my projects what I've had in mind for a longer time, a timelapse project about my home region Kainuu, located in central Finland.
In four months of time I started my timelapse project at the first week of my summer holiday at my grandparents' summer cottage and that's were I came to end my final scene in one of the many coming frosty autumn nights. None of this wouldn't have been possible without the people who took part of the project in their own way. The same story goes on while exploring new locations here in Kainuu with people taking part in the adventure.

Repovesi National Park (Finnish: Repoveden kansallispuisto) is situated in the municipalities of Kouvola and Mäntyharju, only a few hours north-east of the more populous Helsinki area of southern Finland. Formerly a site for intensive commercial forestry, the Repovesi area successfully transformed into a pristine national park. Pine and birch trees dominate the park. Repovesi abounds with wildlife including bear, deer and various birds. The River Koukunjoki flows through the park.

LAPLAND | The Untouched

Lapland – the Untouched takes you to some of the remotest places in the Finnish wilderness. These uninhabited and roadless areas have remained in their near-natural state hidden away from most of mankind – unspoilt, as they should be.

In the northernmost Lapland summer is over before it even begins. During the snow-free time the only way to reach the locations shown in the film is by foot. Lapland the Untouched covers 600km of hiking in 6 wilderness areas and in the Urho Kekkonen National Park and the Kevo Strict Nature Reserve.

I’ve done timelapse-films alone for quite some time now and doing everything on your own requires a lot. Carrying half of your weight in gear in the wild may be physically hard, but the greatest battles are fought in the mind. During the less pleasant moments you realise just how alone you really are and begin to understand what really matters the most. This theme and the extensive Lapland project inspired my shortfilm, The Importance of Being Alone

This project taught me to love and appreciate what I’ve got – not only the amazing people in my life, but also these breathtaking wilderness areas and natural vistas we all share. After witnessing the captivating beauty of these locations it’s appalling to think that similar places around the world are destroyed and exploited relentlessly by mankind and its foolish needs.
