Kandy is a major city in Sri Lanka located in the Central Province. It was the last capital of the ancient kings' era of Sri Lanka. The city lies in the midst of hills in the Kandy plateau, which crosses an area of tropical plantations, mainly tea. Kandy is both an administrative and religious city and is also the capital of the Central Province. Kandy is the home of The Temple of the Tooth Relic , one of the most sacred places of worship in the Buddhist world. It was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1988.

    Alagalla Mountain Range is situated at the boundaries of the Central and Sabaragamuwa Provinces in Sri Lanka. Along with the surrounding Bathalegala aka Bible Rock, Uthuwankanda , Devanagala , Ambuluwawa , Knuckles Mountain Range and Hanthana Mountain Range, Alagalla mountain has served as a natural defense location for nearly five centuries against the Portuguese, Dutch and English invasions aimed at the Kandyan Kingdom.

  • 2. Hanthana Mountain Range Kandy
    The Hanthana Mountain Range lies in central Sri Lanka, south-west of the city of Kandy. It was declared as an environmental protection area in February 2010 under the National Environment Act. The maximum height of the range is 3800 ft. The mountain range consists of seven peaks. The highest one being the Uura Kanda. The range is a favourite destination among the mountain hikers in Sri Lanka. University of Peradeniya is situated adjacent to the Hanthana mountain range.

    The Knuckles Mountain Range lies in central Sri Lanka, in the Districts of Matale and Kandy. The range takes its name from a series of recumbent folds and peaks in the west of the massif which resemble the knuckles of clenched fist when viewed from certain locations in the Kandy District. Whilst this name was assigned by early British surveyors, the Sinhalese residents have traditionally referred to the area as Dumbara Kanduvetiya meaning Mist-laden Mountain Range . The higher montane area is often robed in thick layers of cloud. In addition to its aesthetic value, the range is of great scientific interest.
