Located on the banks of River Amaravathi, it has been ruled at different times, by the Cheras, Later Cholas, Vijayanagar Empire, Madurai Nayaks, Mysore Kingdom and the British. It is situated at about 420 kilometres southwest of the state capital Chennai.

The storage facility was meant to harness excess flood water flowing down River Noyyal and draining from the Lower Bhavani Project canal to irrigate more than 19,000 acres in Karur district. Usually the excess LBP water flows down the Malayathu Palayam banks only between September and December.
