Not even one and a half year ago, the border between Turkey and Syria was the corridor to the busiest trade route towards the Middle-East, now these countries are on the verge of war. What went wrong?

Bram Vermeulen travels Along the borders of Turkey. With the Europe collapsing on one hand and shattering regimes in the Arab world on the other hand, the Turkish influence in these regions will grow. Here the new power relations around the Mediterranean are being drawn. In this exploration conducted by Bram Vermeulen, we learn as much about the Turks as we do about ourselves. The boundaries make the countries and not the other way around. Borders define the country: this is where our domain ends and the domain of others begins. Turkey is a border country. A country that defines itself as cramping from its contrast with its neighbors. Turkey is non-Greek, non-Russian, non-Arabic. Turkey is the twilight zone between the Middle East and Europe.

Bram Vermeulen travels in four episodes Along the borders of Turkey. Here the new power relations around the Mediterranean are being drawn. Big developments with huge consequences for the people living there. Vermeulen enters the twilight zones: Greece, Cyprus, Syria and Iraq, looking for the actual dividing lines between these neighboring countries.

MABUHAY! INSIDE PHILIPPINE AIRLINES NEW BUSINESS CLASS MANILA TO SAN FRANCISCO | BOEING 777-300ER

I get a lot of questions on what is Philippine Airlines Business Class like? We finally found a good PAL business class fare and went for it. We were looking forward to try PAL's updated Business Class seats on their Boeing 777-300ER, and we were not disappointed. The seats are very comfortable and the configuration allowed my companion and I to talk during the flight. The Mabuhay lounge was a nice respite from the zoo that is NAIA Terminal 2. Service from the crew was very good and consistent with our other flights on PAL. The catering was excellent, especially if you like Filipino food. Another great flight on PAL!



What I didn’t like:

The dreaded NAIA Terminal 2. Much like the other terminals at MNL, NAIA T2 requires passengers to go through multiple security checks. When you first approach the terminal entrance, you need to show the security guard your printed itinerary/eticket. Then, once at the entrance of the terminal, they xray your luggage and you go through a metal detector. All US-bound checked baggage are then opened by security during check-in, after which all passengers are asked the usual security questions. That's not the end of it, there's another security checkpoint after immigration, and then another at the gate (for all US-bound flights). Anything for security, I guess...The terminal itself is actually pretty airy with glass windows and high ceilings, but the problem is the terminal building is too small to handle the amount of passengers. There's literally nowhere to sit once you're airside, especially during the evenings when most North America-bound PAL flights depart. There are very limited food choices once you're airside and not many (if any) stores for shopping.

It’s fine...

Philippine Airlines'(PAL) new full flat Business Class seats on their Boeing 777-300ER was a nice improvement over their older Recaro angled flat seats. PAL deployed the Zodiac Aura Enhanced seats, similar to the seats that Turkish Airlines uses on their Boeing 777-300ER aircrafts. The seat is well padded and comfortable when sitting and lounging, but most importantly it turns into a full flat bed when it's time to sleep. Although the 2-3-2 seat configuration is not ideal for the typical business traveler, the cabin felt open and less claustrophobic than other configs we've tried. Business class passengers are provided with a L'Occitane amenity kit, slippers, as well as a full size pillow and thick duvet (similar to the one Qatar Airways uses) to make the 12 hour journey across the Pacific more comfortable.

Onboard service was very good. The crew on this flight were a little bit more reserved than other PAL flights we took, but provided us with great service nonetheless. PAL doesn't use trays during meal service, so our plates were placed directly on the white linen. Refills were proactively offered and we were addressed by name throughout the flight.

In my opinion, PAL's onboard catering is where they shine. They offer a selection of Filipino, Asian, and Western dishes. Being Filipino, it was a nice treat to be able to eat my favorite Filipino dishes onboard. The dishes were all presented nicely and were delicious! I really enjoyed the food offering on this flight.

PAL's Mabuhay Lounge at Manila's Terminal 2 is a relatively small lounge compared to other Airline lounges in their hub. Though there's plenty of seating available, the lounge can get crowded during peak hours. The food offering is good and they offer made to order noodle soups. Don't miss the chicken arroz caldo!

A Pig Slaughter at the Last Small Abbattoir on Prince Edward Island

It's one thing to say bacon is magic and swoon over the deliciousness of pork, but it's another to view the full process of the delicacy - witnessing the slaughter at an abattoir.

Today I did something I've always felt I needed to do but hadn't had the opportunity.

I watched a pig die.

MacQuarries Meat is the last small abattoir in Prince Edward Island and has been a family business for over a century. It is also one of Chef Rouge's favourite suppliers and he asked if I wanted to come to a pig slaughter.

It's clear when you arrive this is not a cold, mass slaughterhouse. Walking into the small office I'm warmly welcomed and people show concern when they hear I want to see the kill. After explaining that it's important to me as a meat eater to see how pork is produced they agree to take me into the kill room and warn me I'll need to walk around the pig.

MacQuarries is not a big commercial factory but a small community business, they only work with 10-12 pigs a day at maximum capacity. The pig is brought into the a small room and has no idea what lies ahead. It's a much different process than a bigger abattoir where masses of pigs are herded in, stressed by the sound of other animals in the area.

My emotions are shielded by the camera lens as I'm intent on documenting why we should support small community agribusiness. Huddled in the corner XXX walks by me with a rifle and a few seconds later the pig who was sniffing around falls dead to the floor.

It's that fast.

Travis, who is only 23 and will be breaking down the pig, comes in and sticks the pig - cutting its throat to drain the blood. It's probably the most disturbing aspect to see as the pig is dead but the nervous system sends the corpse into violent seizures sending a spattering of blood around the room. It reminds me of the backyard water sprinklers I played in as a child. I quickly duck the spray but Chef Rouge catches some on his cheek. There is a lot of blood and it can be intense. But this is food.

Travis is young but skillful and once the body stops moving he has it up on a bench and within seconds it no longer resembles an animal but meat to be butchered.

Travis is focused as he breaks down the animal and all I see is craftmanship. He appears to have an emotional distance from the animal and is one of the sweetest guys you could meet, as he asks Chef Rouge how he's doing while he carves through the flesh. Instead of being queasy by the sight of organ removing and draining blood I'm fascinated by the process.

It's a quick process and Travis puts the pig up on a hook to be XXXXXX and XXXX, he cleans up and we walk out to the meat cutting room and the men ask me how I feel.

Absolutely fine.

I thought it would be a difficult thing to witness. That I'd have trouble eating meat again. Instead it reaffirmed my commitment to know where my food comes from. I feel completely comfortable eating anything from this shop.

At MacQuarries they want to treat the animals as humanely as possible. Yes stressed animals produce tough meat but it's also clear they have respect for the animals. This pig walked into the room never knowing what was about it happen, it wasn't stressed and with a rifle it didn't suffer. If I'm going to eat meat I want it to be from places like MacQuarries, which make it as quick and painless as possible.

I would far rather know my meat came from something here than a large abattoir where pigs are crammed in, stressed by the loud noises and processed by people who have no connection to the animal. They are not butchers but meat cutters and they don't have the skills of someone like Travis.

MacQuarries may not be the cheapest meat in the store, but I think we've all come to realize that our desire for the lowest price could be hurting us in the long run. We need to support our small community businesses now or we may not have the choice between a place like MacQuarries and a meat factory.
