It had a population of 136,812 in the city's administrative limits according to the 2011 census. Kottayam is approximately 146 km north of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala's capital city. It was also known as ‘Cotym’ and ‘Cottayam’ during the British Raj. It is one of the main centres of literature and hence called Akshara Nagari or Land of Letters.     Illikkal Kallu is a major attraction in Moonnilavu village of Meenachil taluk in the Kottayam district of Kerala, India. Situated 6000 feet above sea level, Illickal Kallu is a rock situated above Illickal Mala. What makes this rock unique is that half of the rock has fallen off, and only the other half remains. The nearest town to this spot is Teekoy. Numerous mountain streams in this peak, flow down to form the Meenachil River. Tourists must trek <1 km to reach the summit of the peak. Illikkal Kallu comprises three hills, each rising to 4,000 ft above sea level. Each of the hills has a peculiar shape. One of them resembles a mushroom, which is why it is known as Kuda Kallu .     Marmala Waterfall lies a few kilometres away from Erattupetta, in Kottayam district, Kerala, India inside a private estate, . It is exactly 8 km from Teekoy. The road from Mangalagiri to Marmala Waterfall is currently under construction and solling is completed recently only. Once reaching the base station, one has to trek through the estate over the slippery rocky path inorder to reach the waterfalls. Marmala waterfall is about 60 metres in height, falling into a 12-meter deep pool and joins the River Teekoy way down.
