Budapest bildades 1873 då Óbuda och Buda slogs samman med Pest, som låg öster respektive väster om floden Donau. Intill bergen vid floden ligger Buda och här står parlamentsbyggnader, villor som tidigare tillhört gamla godsägare, samt det häftiga palatset. Huvudstadens administrativa och kommersiella centrum är beläget på Pestsidan.
