Lensky District is an administrative and municipal district , one of the thirty-four in the Sakha Republic, Russia. It is located in the southwest of the republic and borders Mirninsky District in the north, Suntarsky District in the northeast, Olyokminsky District in the east, and Irkutsk Oblast in the south and west. The area of the district is 77,000 square kilometers . Its administrative center is the town of Lensk. As of the 2010 Census, the total population of the district was 39,765, with the population of Lensk accounting for 62.8% of that number.

Arkhangelsk , also known in English as Archangel and Archangelsk, is a city and the administrative center of Arkhangelsk Oblast, in the north of European Russia. It lies on both banks of the Northern Dvina River near its exit into the White Sea. The city spreads for over 40 kilometers along the banks of the river and numerous islands of its delta. Arkhangelsk was the chief seaport of medieval and early modern Russia until 1703. A 1,133-kilometer-long railway runs from Arkhangelsk to Moscow via Vologda and Yaroslavl, and air travel is served by the Talagi Airport and a smaller Vaskovo Airport. As of the 2010 Census, the city's population was 348,783, down from 356,051 recorded in the 2002 Census, and further down from 415,921 recorded in the 1989 Census.

Lensky Education Forum - Yakutsk 2016

In August 2016, I travelled to Yakutsk in Siberia to take part in the Lensky Education Forum in my role as a UNESCO Expert Consultant.

Here are some of the sights and sounds of this remarkable city which holds the world record for being the coldest city in the world.

Yakutsk is the capital of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) in the Russian Federation. This part of Siberia experiences temperatures as low as -80c in the winter with highs of almost 50c in the summer. There are no high rise buildings due to permafrost which covers the whole area. The Lensky Forum was organised by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Sakha to explore new approaches to teaching and learning and to showcase some of the work of schools in the area.
