Lithuania , officially the Republic of Lithuania , is a country in the Baltic region of northern-eastern Europe. Since its independence, Lithuania has been referred to as one of the Baltic states. It is situated along the southeastern shore of the Baltic Sea, to the east of Sweden and Denmark. It is bordered by Latvia to the north, Belarus to the east and south, Poland to the south, and Kaliningrad Oblast to the southwest.     Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre is an opera house and ballet theatre in Vilnius, Lithuania. It was built in 1974. Apart from standard Western and Russian repertory works, the opera also performs national operas. Vytautas Klova's opera Pilėnai , has since 2001 been performed outdoors during the summer at Trakai Island Castle. Bronius Kutavičius' opera Lokys , after Prosper Mérimée's short story Lokis the bear, was commissioned by the Vilnius Festival. The ballet has performed several productions by Russian choreographer Boris Eifman, among them Red Giselle.
