RV Living: Leavenworth Washington 2019. This video is about our trip to the small Bavarian themed town of Leavenworth Washington which is located in the beautiful Cascade Mountain Range. We spend a full week exploring everything that Leavenworth Washington and the surrounded cascade mountains had to offer. We stayed at the Thousand Trails RV park which is located about 30 minutes north of the town of Leavenworth Washington. We explored multiple rv camping areas in order to give you a good understanding of where to stay if you plan to travel to this area of the Country. We had a chance to take a dip in their lakes and rivers and as well as a few beautiful hikes.
A sawmill and a healthy logging industry eventually fell apart when the Great Northern Railway Company pulled out of Leavenworth. The re-routing of the railroad and the subsequent closure of the sawmill sadly converted the town from a bustling, thriving hub of commerce into a hollow, empty community. For more than thirty years, Leavenworth lived on the brink of extinction.
But in the early 1960’s, everything changed. In a last-chance effort to turn their precarious situation around, the leaders of the community decided to change Leavenworth’s appearance, hoping to bring tourism into the area. Using the beautiful backdrop of the surrounding Alpine hills to their advantage, the town agreed to remodel their hamlet in the form of a Bavarian village.
Hoping to create more than a mere facelift, the entire community rallied to create the illusion of Bavaria in the middle of Washington State. Besides the complete renovation of the downtown area, community members worked to begin a series of festivals. The Autumn Leaf Festival, Maifest, and the extremely popular Christmas Lighting Ceremony were the first of many attractions Leavenworth offered to passers-by.
The new plan worked. Ever since the change to a Bavarian motif, Leavenworth has become a pillar of the tourism industry in the Pacific Northwest. Today, close to two million tourists come to Leavenworth each year, each visitor finding their own individual love affair with the community. The story is a landmark case of human spirit: The people of Leavenworth not only survived their most critical hour, they endured.
Leavenworth's transformation into a theme town was inspired, and assisted, by Solvang, California. Later, the Washington town of Winthrop followed Leavenworth's example and adopted a Western town theme.
Good Morning America went too Leavenworth for Holiday Gifts for the Globe where GMA helped light up the town for the Christmas Holiday. Leavenworth was also named the Ultimate Holiday Town USA by A&E.
Leavenworth is home to the Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum, which opened in 1995 and contains more than 5,000 nutcrackers dating from prehistoric to modern. Leavenworth hosts an annual Oktoberfest celebration.

SUBSCRIBE HERE!! The Lewis and Clark Bridge is a cantilever bridge that spans the Columbia River between Longview, Washington and Rainier, Oregon. At the time of completion, it had the longest cantilever span in the United States. The bridge was opened on March 29, 1930, as a privately owned bridge named the Longview Bridge.

At the time it was the longest and highest cantilever bridge in the United States. The state of Washington purchased the bridge in 1947 and the tolls were removed in 1965 after the bridge was paid for. In 1980 the bridge was rededicated as the Lewis and Clark Bridge in honor of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The deck was replaced in 2003–04 at a cost of $29.2 million.
The bridge is 8,288 ft (2.5 km) long with 210 ft (64 m) of vertical clearance. The main span is 1,200 ft (366 m) long and the top of the bridge is 340 ft (104 m) above the river. It was designed by Joseph Strauss, engineer of the Golden Gate Bridge.
In 1982, the bridge was entered on the National Register of Historic Places, as the Longview Bridge.

Video shows you what to expect driving west from Sidney, BC to the south-east corner of Washington State. This is the first episode of a trans-continental road trip to Ontario, Canada through the USA.
The route for this leg is Washington State Ferries from Sidney, BC to Anacortes, WA. I-5 South to I-405 (to miss Seattle's traffic) to I-90 through the Cascade Range I-82 to Yakima, Kennewick, and the Oregon border (Umatilla).

Spirit Lake was an amazing place to canoe, and the views of the mountain were spectacular. Today, Mount Saint Helens shows a new kind of beauty, and is known as a national volcanic monument. I hope you enjoy this spectacular footage of the mountain my family has enjoyed so much over the years.
Footage was shot with a 4K camera mounted to an Autel Robotics Drone. Johnston's Ridge Observatory is located in what is believed to be the exact spot he was standing on that fateful day of May, 18, 1980. His words at 8:32am screamed over the radio, Vancouver, Vancouver, this is it! It sent chills up our spine as we listened from home. We were more than 30 miles away to the east, but the plume from the blast was immediately visible, and the sky filled with a dark cloud within moments. It was eerie to think that the voice of David Johnston was forever silent.
Here's an excerpt from Wikipedia: David Alexander Johnston (December 18, 1949 – May 18, 1980) was an American USGS volcanologist who was killed by the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington. A principal scientist on the USGS monitoring team, Johnston was killed in the eruption while manning an observation post 6 miles (10 km) away on the morning of May 18, 1980. He was the first to report the eruption, transmitting Vancouver! Vancouver! This is it! before he was swept away by a lateral blast. Despite a thorough search, Johnston's body was never found, but state highway workers discovered remnants of his USGS trailer in 1993.
Johnston's career took him across the United States, where he studied the Augustine Volcano in Alaska, the San Juan volcanic field in Colorado, and long-extinct volcanoes in Michigan. Johnston was a meticulous and talented scientist, known for his analyses of volcanic gases and their relationship to eruptions. This, along with his enthusiasm and positive attitude, made him liked and respected by many co-workers. After his death, other scientists lauded his character, both verbally and in dedications and letters. Johnston felt scientists must do what is necessary, including taking risks, to help protect the public from natural disasters. His work, and that of fellow USGS scientists convinced authorities to close Mount St. Helens to the public before the 1980 eruption. They maintained the closure despite heavy pressure to re-open the area; their work saved thousands of lives. His story became intertwined within the popular image of volcanic eruptions and their threat to society, and a part of volcanology's history. To date, Johnston, along with Harry Glicken, is one of two American volcanologists known to have died in a volcanic eruption.
Following his death, Johnston was commemorated in several ways, including a memorial fund established in his name at the University of Washington to fund graduate-level research. Two volcano observatories were established and named after him: one in Vancouver, Washington, and another on the ridge where he died. Johnston's life and death are featured in several documentaries, films, docudramas and books. Along with others who died during the eruption, Johnston's name is inscribed on memorials dedicated to their memory.
