Ukraine (Ukrainian: Україна) is a country in Eastern Europe. It lies at the northwest end of the Black Sea, with Russia to the east, Belarus to the north, Poland to the northwest, Slovakia and Hungary to the west, and Romania to the south west and south, with Moldova in between.
Most of the country (the central and eastern portions) was formerly a part of Russian Empire; after the October Revolution and the Civil War, the entire country, known as the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, was a part of the Soviet Union. Ukraine is the second-largest country in Europe, albeit with a slightly declining population.

Travel Warning WARNING ( 2 ): Be aware that is illegal to take any items of historical importance out of the country. This includes badges, medals, icons, historical paintings, etc. This law is strictly enforced at all exit points of the country and one risks heavy fines and/or imprisonment.
To shop you will most certainly need local currency (hryvnia). British pound, Euro, US dollar and other currency exchange points are very common in cities, and the exchange rate is usually very fair (except in Kiev, where the exchange rate is higher compared to other cities). However, sometimes and in some banks there are problems with cash deposits (or that is the official version), so do not exchange too many dollars unless you're traveling to the more provincial areas. When doing person-to-person payments you might be able to pay in Euros or US dollars, as those are widely recognized, and you might in fact get better rates than in official exchange points. However, be careful, because it's not legal to make payments with foreign currency.
If you want to buy any kind of artwork in Kiev, the place to visit is Andriivskij Uzviz (Андріївський узвіз in Ukrainian, Андреевский спуск in Russian).
If you don't want to have trouble exchanging money keep one of these currencies: EUR, RUB, USD. In South and East Ukraine, it is almost impossible to exchange other currency. In Western Ukraine (especially in Lviv) PLN (polish zloty) can also be exchanged without any problems.
Eat in Ukraine

Ukrainian cuisine is quite tasty, but just as other cuisines in the region uses a lot of fat ingredients, especially in the festive dishes. Traditional local food includes salo (salted lard) and soups like borshch (борщ in Ukrainian) made of red beets or solianka (солянка in Ukrainian) which is a delicious meat soup. The first, salo, is perhaps something you might not make yourself try - however is a delicious side dish, as for the soups being a must-have dish.
If you are outside a big city or in doubt about food, exercise caution and common sense about where you buy food. Try to buy groceries only in supermarkets or large grocery stores, always check the expiration date, and never buy meat or dairy products on the street (you can buy them at the market but not near the market).
In most towns in Ukraine there are some very good restaurants. Read the menu boards posted by the entrance of every establishment to help you to choose.
You may also find nice places to eat not by signs, but just by the smoke of traditional wood fires. These are often places where they serve traditional Ukrainian food, including very tasty shashlyky (шашлики in Ukrainian). Restaurateurs are very friendly, and, more often than not, you will be one of their first foreign visitors. Next to the borshch, you might also ask for varenyky (вареники in Ukrainian, dumplings filled with meat, vegetables or fruits) or deruny (деруни, potato pancakes). You have to try varenyky with potatoes and cottage cheese in a sautéed onion and sourcream sauce, a fantastic dish. These are just starters, but ones that might fill you up quickly.

The situation in Ukraine
Yes, there’s a war in Ukraine. Eastern part of the country (around cities of Donetsk and Lugansk) is a big “don’t go there” zone. If your common sense doesn’t give you enough signs to check the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, there’ll be a warning issued for sure.
But Ukraine is a huge country, one of the biggest in Europe and if you plan to go to Kiev or west there’s nothing to be worried about. Life goes normally there, people stroll down the streets and walk around in parks, cafes are full, a disturbingly big number of huge fancy weddings take place around and you don’t notice that the country you’re in has so many troubles.
Is it safe to travel to Ukraine ?
I personally think that in general this country is one of the safest in the Europe. Yes, it could sound in an odd way, but its true. At least, the police here is the one which really cares about your security.
As for the social life, while in the Western world people spend their free time in shopping centers or behind the computer screens in Eastern Europe it’s more about being outdoors and hanging out with friends/family.
One of my friends who is very familiar with this country, says :
« I’ve been to Ukraine over 10 times now and I don’t recall even one situation when I thought something is wrong and when I felt in danger. And while it was perfectly safe before the revolution now it seemed to be even safer and the presence of the police of army was even bigger but they didn’t disturb anyone. »
Statistics about tourism in Ukraine in 2018

The total number of international tourists in Ukraine in 2018 is around 2 million people:

5. Development of event tourism (2018 UEFA Champions League Final, Eurovision Song Contest 2017, Upark Festival, Atlas Weekend Festival and others)

« I lived in Kyiv for over a year and a half between 2016 and 2017, and in that time I traveled solo extensively, from Lviv to Odessa to Kharkiv and many places between. Not only did I feel safe 99% of the time, but also people were genuinely curious and helpful when they discovered I was a woman traveling alone in Ukraine.
I took overnight trains, stayed in hostels, and did my best with the minibus system. I even felt comfortable going for a cocktail alone, something I don’t do typically in the States and ended up with friendships with several bartenders.
The biggest safety tip I have for travelers is to pay attention to scams and pickpockets in Kyiv. I never had any problems myself, but I heard stories of ‘lost’ passports and scams from my friends. Just like in any city – keep your street smarts around you and your wallet secure and you should be fine. »

Ukraine: its Donbass conflict
In Ukraine, in the region of Donbass there is an ongoing conflict. How did this conflict start and how are people in the Donbass area dealing with this conflict that tears apart families and entire villages? Is Ukraine a divided country where war will destroy regions like the Donbass? A documentary about Ukraine, the conflict in the Donbass region and the people that have to live with it.
For over a year, a dirty battle has been going on in 'the Donbass', an area rich with coal and industry in East Ukraine. More than six thousand people have been killed so far. Jelle talks to the Russian rebels at the front. What kind of people are they? He also visits the Donetsk opera, which has a show every day - war or no war.
In this eight-part travel series the Dutch journalist and author Jelle Brandt Corstius travels through Russia and visits the neighbor countries Latvia, Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan. What image do the Russians have of their neighbors and vice versa? What are the relations between the powerful Russia and the other former Soviet republics? And how do the countries around Russia treat their Russian inhabitants? A series about propaganda and identity.
On the Maidan, Kiev´s central square, in spring of 2014 the war started. Thousands of people demanded closer relations with Europe. After weeks of protests, the police intervened. One hundred people died. In Ukraine they are known as the Heavenly Hundred. President Yanukovych fled to Russia and the revolution started. And with the revolution came the war that would split the country in two. Dutch Journalist Corstius talks to people on the street and investigates the status quo and the way the population deals with the changes the country has gone through.
He visits the place in Odessa where on May 2 2014 46 pro-Russian activists died from suffocation in a former trade union building. They were under attack from pro-Ukrainian activists and a fire broke out. Until today it is not clear what caused it. This fire made many Russians leave for Ukraine to join the fight so that the war spread from Crimea to the entire eastern region of Ukraine.

Загалом за звичайне ліжко-місце з мінімумом зручностей сьогодні власники номерів просять приблизно 200 грн з людини за добу, надалі ціни зростатимуть. Власники готелів з купою зручностей просять за добу від 400 (без харчування) до 1250 грн за одну людину за проживання у комфортному номері з харчуванням.

Запорізька і Донецька область: Азовське море не тільки для дітей.
• Бердянськ (Запорізька обл) - найвідоміше місто узбережжя. Є вся необхідна для розваг інфраструктура. Купатися відпочивальники їздять на косу (міські пляжі тут, чесно, не дуже). У місті можна винаймати житло за мінімальною ціною 100-150 грн/доба на людину (якщо не свято чи розгар сезону, який стартує з перших днів червня і триває до кінця липня), або номер класу напівлюкс чи люкс вартістю 700-1200 грн/добу на 3-4 особи. Харчування вам обійдеться: 100-150 грн - обід у місцевих кафе та столових. проїзд містом громадським транспортом - 6 грн. Якщо звикли користуватися таксі, то готуйтеся: витрати на таксі будуть шалені - на вас чесано зароблятимуть.
Розваги. На Бердянській косі є Аквапарк, в місті щодня під час сезону проводяться концерти на Набережній. Перевага відпочинку - відносно недорого. Недоліки - корки в напрямках на пляжі з чистою водою, відсутність нормального енергопостачання (в місті часто відмикають світло), проблеми з санітарією. Місто можна відвідувати для розваг, відпочинку, але для оздоровлення і з дітьми варто обрати більш тихе містечко. Не пийте місцеву воду - бутильована з антибіотиками з місцевих супермаркетів корисніша разів в сто...
• Приморськ (Запорізька обл.) - невелике тихе містечко. Розваг майже немає. На узбережжі маса санаторіїв та баз відпочинку. Ціни за номер, у середньому, 1200-1500 грн/доба за 3 місцевий номер класу “стандарт” з харчуванням на 3 місця. Море - найчистіше на узбережжі. Для оздоровлення і спокійного відпочинку з дітьми - дуже гарний варіант.
Недоліки - в більшості санаторіїв вузькі пляжі, відділені від основної території лиманом, який переходити треба містками довжиною 300-400 м... Більше - у відео.
