Best Places To Hike In Georgia - Indian Trail Palisades Chattahoochee River National Park
My favorite spot in Atlanta to hike is the Indian Trail Palisades in The Chattahoochee River National Park. Hands down, if you have not been here before, you need to invest two - three hours on this trail. It leads to Rapids, Rocky Cascades, Ruins, Overlooks. Best place to hike in Atlanta, GA Period!

About Downtown Atlanta
Downtown Atlanta is the heart of the sprawling Metro Atlanta area and home to one of the largest business districts in the Southeast. The downtown area, with its numerous tourist attractions, entertainment centers, restaurants, hotels, and business sectors attracts millions of tourists every year while supporting hundreds of thousands of residents and business professionals on a daily basis.
History
The Downtown Atlanta area traces its roots back to 1826, when railroad surveyors began looking for a route between Milledgeville and Chattanooga. As a result of this survey and railroad construction, a town named Terminus was founded in 1837 in what is now Downtown Atlanta. In 1842, the thirty citizens of Terminus voted to change the town’s name to Marthasville in honor of then Governor Lumpkin’s daughter, Martha. Just five years later, in 1847, the town again changed names and became Atlanta.
The original downtown area had just seven streets: Peachtree Street, Whitehall Street, Marietta Street, Decatur Street, Pryor Street, Loyd Street (now Central Avenue), and Alabama Street.
Business
Downtown Atlanta has grown significantly since those early days, and is now one of the largest business districts in the country with over 22 million square feet of office space. Because of the city’s central location, several of the nation’s top fortune 500 companies, including Coca-Cola and CNN, have their headquarters in Downtown Atlanta. In addition, Downtown Atlanta is home to the largest skyscraper in the U.S. outside of New York and Chicago – the Bank of America Plaza building.
Attractions
Alongside many of the city’s top companies are major attractions and exhibits that draw millions of tourists and visitors to the bustling Downtown Atlanta area every year. From the Coca Cola museum to the Georgia Aquarium and the CNN studio tours, there are numerous popular attractions all within walking distance of one another which makes touring Downtown Atlanta easy and accessible.
Shopping
Downtown Atlanta is located in close proximity to many popular shopping destinations that bring locals and visitors together on a daily basis to experience the best shopping in the city. Some of the popular nearby shopping malls include Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza as well as Atlantic Station.
Hotels
Nearly every well-known hotel chain has a location in Downtown Atlanta. If you are looking for a more unique experience, the downtown area is home to some unique boutique hotels that offer a one-of-a-kind experience to travelers and locals alike.
Sports and Entertainment
Atlanta is home to several of the nation’s top sports teams and venues including the Hawks NBA basketball team, the Braves MLB baseball team, the Thrashers NHL hockey team and the Falcons NFL football team. The Phillips Arena (Thrashers, Hawks), Turner Field (Braves) and the Georgia Dome (Falcons) are not only home field for Atlanta’s sports teams but also double as top entertainment venues for concerts, shows and performances.
Colleges and Universities
Several major college campuses are located in Downtown Atlanta. Georgia Tech and Georgia State reside in the heart of Downtown Atlanta, adding a youthful flair to the area during the school year.
Transportation
Atlanta is home to Hartsfield Jackson International, which is the main hub of Delta Airlines and also the busiest airport in the nation. There are numerous transportation options for travelers looking to get to and from the city, including rental car, taxi, shuttle bus, and MARTA. MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) is Atlanta’s public transportation and runs trains from the airport to several stops in Downtown Atlanta and many places throughout Metro Atlanta at affordable rates. MARTA also runs city busses with routes throughout downtown and metro Atlanta. For those travelers with cars, interstates 75 and 85 intersect Downtown Atlanta and interstate 285 forms a ring around the downtown area.

Blood Mountain Hike On The Appalachian Trail In North Georgia

Blood Mountain is the highest peak on the Georgia section of the Appalachian Trail and the sixth-tallest mountain in Georgia, with an elevation of 4,458 feet (1,359 m). It is located on the border of Lumpkin County with Union County and is within the boundaries of the Chattahoochee National Forest and the Blood Mountain Wilderness. There are several waterfalls, hiking trails and other recreational areas in the vicinity.
History
Two Indian tribes resided in North Georgia in the 16th century. By the late 17th century the Cherokee and Creek began to compete for resources and fought a battle on the mountain near Slaughter Gap. The Creek lost, ceding Blood Mountain to the Cherokee, who considered it a holy place. Archaeological evidence has been discovered that tends to back the story of the battle, but the date of the battle and its participants are still hotly disputed.
There are various theories on the origin of the mountain's name. Some believe that the name of the mountain comes from a bloody battle between the Cherokee and Creek Indians. Some people believe that it got its name based on all the lichen and Catawba growing near the summit.
The mountain drew media attention in January 2008 when 24-year-old hiker Meredith Emerson went missing from a nearby trail. Her body was later recovered some distance away. Authorities arrested Gary Hilton on charges of murdering Emerson. On January 31 Hilton pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison.
Hiking and Recreation
This peak has scenic views from the large rock formations that top the mountain. There is a hiker's shelter at the top of the mountain maintained by the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club, and at the bottom of the eastern side of the mountain is a hostel and store (at Neel Gap, where the Appalachian Trail intersects U.S. Highway 19/129) at the Walasi-Yi Interpretive Center. The summit shelter is a two-room stone cabin which was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in January 2013. The Walasi-Yi Center started out as log cabin constructed in the early 20th century by a logging company. It was renovated and expanded by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933-38 into a larger stone building. The Center now houses a store; its breezeway is the only place the Appalachian Trail passes through a man-made structure.
There is a short (2 mile) but steep (1,800 foot elevation gain) approach trail to the top of the mountain from a parking area to the immediate north of the Walasi-Yi Center. This hike affords spectacular views as one approaches the summit but the final 1.5 miles (2.4 km), past the Flatrock Gap intersection with the Byron Reece Trail, is fraught with switchbacks. It is perhaps the most hiked segment of the Appalachian Trail in Georgia. Another approach is from the other side at Lake Winfield Scott via the Slaughter Creek Trail. This approach, which is easier to hike, has excellent campsites and abundant sources of treatable water.
Adjacent to the mountain are several boulderfields and stands of northern hardwoods and large buckeyes. Portions of the area were previously logged and now sport fast-growing tulip poplar.
Near Blood Mountain are DeSoto Falls Scenic Recreation Area and campground, Vogel State Park and Sosebee Cove Scenic Area. All are accessible from Blood Mountain by trail and road.
