Lutsen is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Lutsen Township, Cook County, Minnesota, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 190.Lutsen is located within the Superior National Forest, on the North Shore of Lake Superior. It is 18 miles southwest of the city of Grand Marais; and 65 miles northeast of the city of Two Harbors. Cascade River State Park and the Superior Hiking Trail are both nearby. Minnesota Highway 61 serves as a main route in the community.

    Lutsen Mountains is a ski area in the north central United States; an Alpine skiing area located on the North Shore region of Cook County in northeastern Minnesota. Lutsen is one of the northernmost ski areas in the United States outside of Alaska. It is located in the Sawtooth Mountains, which are hills that are part of the Superior Highlands on the north shore of Lake Superior. Lutsen receives natural snow, at times lake effect snow from the lake at its foot, and also has snowmaking equipment. Lutsen Mountains Resort is the largest ski resort in the Midwest, also having the most vertical drop in the Midwest.
