Madeira , officially the Autonomous Region of Madeira is one of the two autonomous regions of Portugal . It is an archipelago situated in the north Atlantic Ocean, southwest of Portugal. Its total population was estimated in 2011 at 267,785. The capital of Madeira is Funchal, which is located on the main island's south coast. The archipelago is just under 400 kilometres north of Tenerife, Canary Islands. Bermuda and Madeira, a few time zones apart, are the only land in the Atlantic on the 32nd parallel north.   • 2. Pico Ruivo Madeira Islands
    Pico Ruivo is the highest peak on the Madeira Island. It can be reached only by foot, usually either via a long trail from Pico do Arieiro or from Achada do Teixeira via a shorter trail. There is an additional trail leading west to Encumeada. A hut just below the summit is permanently closed but there is water tap and toilets available. Pico Ruivo is 1,861 metres high, and provides views of the island from coast to coast. Unpredictable weather conditions can make it quite dangerous.
