Its total population was estimated in 2011 at 267,785. The capital of Madeira is Funchal, which is located on the main island's south coast. The archipelago is just under 400 kilometres north of Tenerife, Canary Islands. Bermuda and Madeira, a few time zones apart, are the only land in the Atlantic on the 32nd parallel north.     Praia , is the capital and largest city of Cape Verde, an island nation in the Atlantic Ocean west of Senegal. It lies on the southern coast of Santiago island in the Sotavento Islands group. It is the island's ferry port and is home to one of the nation’s four international airports. The city centre is known as Plateau due to its location on a small plateau. Praia is a centre of commerce, government and education, and a port that ships coffee, sugar cane, and tropical fruits. It is the seat of the Praia municipality.

    Ponta de São Lourenço is the easternmost point of the island of Madeira, it is inside the town of Caniçal and forms a part of the municipality of Machico. Its terrain are made up of rocks and herbaceous vegetation. Since 1982, the headland is a nature reserve, where it has the conservation of its endemic plants including Matthiola maderensis, Echium nervosum and Andryala glandulosa and fauna, being birds, insects and molluscs. One of them is Monachus monachus, a butterfly. Marine fauna are in the waters surrounding the headland. Northeast of the islet is Porto Santo and southeast is Bugio and the Deserted Islands.     Pico Ruivo is the highest peak on the Madeira Island. It can be reached only by foot, usually either via a long trail from Pico do Arieiro or from Achada do Teixeira via a shorter trail. There is an additional trail leading west to Encumeada. A hut just below the summit is permanently closed but there is water tap and toilets available. Pico Ruivo is 1,861 metres high, and provides views of the island from coast to coast. Unpredictable weather conditions can make it quite dangerous.
