Mont Ventoux is a mountain in the Provence region of southern France, located some 20 km northeast of Carpentras, Vaucluse. On the north side, the mountain borders the Drôme département. At 1,909m, it is the highest mountain in the region and has been nicknamed the Beast of Provence, the Giant of Provence, or The Bald Mountain. It has gained fame through its inclusion in the Tour de France cycling race; in 2009 it was the scene of the first penultimate-day mountain top finish in the Tour de France, with Alberto Contador sealing his yellow jersey. As the name might suggest , it can get windy at the summit, especially with the mistral; wind speeds as high as 320 km/h have been recorded. The wind blows at 90+ km/h 240 days a year. The Pont du Gard is an ancient Roman aqueduct that crosses the Gardon River near the town of Vers-Pont-du-Gard in southern France. The Pont du Gard, built as three tiers of archways to bring water to the city of Nîmes, is the highest of all elevated Roman aqueducts, and one of the best preserved. It was added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1985 because of its historical importance. The aqueduct bridge is part of the Nîmes aqueduct, a 50-kilometre system built in the first century AD to carry water from a spring at Uzès to the Roman colony of Nemausus . Because of the uneven terrain between the two points, the mostly underground aqueduct followed a long, winding route that called for a bridge across the gorge of the Gardon River. The structure is owned by the municipality of Orange and is the home of the summer opera festival, the Chorégies d'Orange. The Mighty Mont Ventoux 2017

This was my pilgrimmage down to France this summer where I first drove, then cycled up and finally raced down one of the all time great peaks of the Tour de France. I borrowed Hans Zimmer's soundtrack to the F1 film, Rush, to give dramatic effect to the whole experience.
