Mandalay is the second-largest city and the last royal capital of Myanmar . Located 716 km north of Yangon on the east bank of the Irrawaddy River, the city has a population of 1,225,553 . Mandalay is the economic centre of Upper Burma and considered the centre of Burmese culture. A continuing influx of Chinese immigrants, mostly from Yunnan, in the past twenty years, has reshaped the city's ethnic makeup and increased commerce with China. Despite Naypyidaw's recent rise, Mandalay remains Upper Burma's main commercial, educational and health center.

    Mandalay Hill is a 240 metres hill that is located to the northeast of the city centre of Mandalay in Myanmar. The city took its name from the hill. Mandalay Hill is known for its abundance of pagodas and monasteries, and has been a major pilgrimage site for Burmese Buddhists for nearly two centuries. At the top of the hill is the Sutaungpyei Pagoda. A panoramic view of Mandalay from the top of Mandalay Hill alone makes it worthwhile to attempt a climb up its stairways. There are four covered stairways called saungdan leading up the hill from the south, southeast, west and north, and convenient seats of masonry work line these stairways all the way up.   • 2. Mingun Pahtodawgyi Mandalay
    The Mingun Pahtodawgyi is an incomplete monument stupa in Mingun, approximately 10 kilometres northwest of Mandalay in Sagaing Region in central Myanmar . The ruins are the remains of a massive construction project begun by King Bodawpaya in 1790 which was intentionally left unfinished. The pahtodawgyi is seen as the physical manifestations of the well known eccentricities of Bodawpaya. He set up an observation post on an island off Mingun to personally supervise the construction of the temple.

    The Atumashi Monastery is a Buddhist monastery located in Mandalay, Myanmar .It was built in 1857 by King Mindon, two years after the capital was moved to Mandalay. The monastery was built at a cost of 500,000 rupees. The original monastery structure was built using teak, covered with stucco on the outside, with its peculiar feature being that it was surmounted by five graduated rectangular terraces instead of the traditional pyatthats, Burmese-style tiered and spired roofs. The structure burned down in 1890 after a fire in the city destroyed both the monastery and the 30 feet tall Buddha image, as well as complete sets of the Tipitaka.     Field Marshal William Joseph Slim, 1st Viscount Slim, , usually known as Bill Slim, was a British military commander and the 13th Governor-General of Australia. Slim saw active service in both the First and Second world wars and was wounded in action three times. During the Second World War he led the 14th Army, the so-called forgotten army in the Burma campaign. After the war he became the first British officer who had served in the Indian Army to be appointed Chief of the Imperial General Staff. From 1953 to 1959 he was Governor-General of Australia and is regarded by many Australians as an authentic war hero who had fought with the Anzacs at Gallipoli.In the early 1930s, Slim also wrote novels, short stories, and other publications under the pen name Anthony Mills.
