In this visit, we hike the Occoneechee Plantation Trail, a short loop that passes by the original plantation house site, Terraced Gardens, and other interesting historical sites, as well as a section of beautiful woods. Whittles Mill Park on Meherrin River in South Hill, Virginia
The Max B. Crowder Memorial Park, more commonly referred to as the Whittles Mill Park, is a small property along the banks of the Meherrin River that is owned by Mecklenburg County and maintained by the nearby town of South Hill, Virginia. There was once a grist mill on this site that dated back to the 1700s. The grist mill, along with dozens of others on the river in this area, were vitally important to the local economy for centuries. The mill has not survived time, but you can see evidence of the mill and read about the history on interpretive signs. The old dam, built on a natural shelf in the river, is still intact. The site currently operates a small hydroelectric generator.
On the north bank of the river, in Lunenburg County, you will find an interesting rock wall. These rocks are perhaps as much as a billion years old. The rocks are the roots of an ancient mountain range that once towered over this area. Beginning around 300 million years ago, continental collision caused a massive mountain range to be pushed up all across what is today the Piedmont region stretching from Pennsylvania to Alabama.
