Santorini is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Greece and in Europe, especially among couples. It’s best known for its iconic whitewashed houses and blue-domed chapels that are perched on the cliffside, overlooking the legendary caldera and its world-famous sunset.

Here are more bits you should know about the island.
Language: Greek. However, English is widely spoken. Street signs are written both in Greek and English, so going around isn’t a problem at all.
Currency: Euro (EUR, €). €1 = 1.14 USD, SGD 1.6, PHP 61 (as of October 2018)
Modes of Payment: Cash is still the most common, but credit card payments are widely accepted too.
Best Time to Visit Santorini
April to October. This period sees sunny skies and generally pleasant weather.
In particular, the summer months of June to September are the driest and hottest, which is great for chasing the beach. However, it is also the high season, so expect the island to be crowded and the prices to go higher.
What to do in Santorini in 2019 ?
If you want to avoid the crowd and have the island to yourself (and a few others), travel between mid-November and March, Santorini’s off season. This is when the prices of flights and hotels go down drastically. I know because this is exactly how I was able to visit Santorini: cheap airfare and rooms. But there’s a catch.
Santorini is home to several communities spread around the island. The best place to stay depends on your travel style. Basically, the first thing you should ask yourself is whether you want to stay on the beach or atop the cliff. But most tourists visit Santorini for that gorgeous view of the caldera and the sunset. In this case, pick a village that is perched on the island’s cliffs. You have four great options: Fira, Oia, Imerovigli, and Firostefani and that is a best Things to do in Santorini 2019
Fira. The capital and main town of the island. This is where most the action happens. Lots of lodging options and tour agencies. Plenty of cafes, bars, and restaurants around. Nightlife is vibrant too. Almost all bus routes in the island start and end at the main terminal in Fira, which means every part of the island is accessible from here. If you’re a backpacker or budget traveler, stay in Fira.
Firostefani. Situated north of Fira. Just like in Fira, the views here are majestic. It also has the same vibe, with a lot of accommodations and restaurants. The difference is, it’s less crowded.
Imerovigli. Farther north from Firostefani. Built on the tallest part of the caldera ridge at 300masl, this village is often dubbed the “Balcony of the Aegean.” Small hotels and restaurants abound too. Oia. The poster village of the island. The photos in most Santorini postcards you see are shot here in Oia. Lying in the caldera edge of the island’s northernmost tip, it also offers a marvelous view of the caldera and the sunset. It is a top attraction so expect it to be heavily crowded with hordes of tourists during the day in peak season. Cliffside hotels or suites are not for everyone. The hotels and points of interest are connected by staircases that wind across the side of the cliff. Santorini Pyrgos and Megalochori village , Greece

Pyrgos can found at the highest point of Santorini, with panoramic views of the whole island all the way to the village of Oia. This hillside village was declared a protected settlement in 1995.
Pyrgos is a typical Fortress Settlement of the Cyclades. On the hilltop you can find ruins of Kasteli Castle, one of the five 'kastelia' on the island. Although there are many reports that Pyrgos was the capital of Santorini in the mid 18th century, the truth is that Pyrgos has never been the island's capital.There is a memorial plaque near the entrance to the castle, commemorating those who died in the Second World War.
Megalochori is one of the most picturesque villages on the island. Its existence is recorded back to the 17th century.
Home to historical mansions, old traditional houses, pirate hideaways and wine canavas, it has a history of merchants and wealthy land barons exporting Vinsanto wine that the island still produces. A prominent feature of the historical homes and mansions are the high walls, inner courtyards and solid wooden door entrances, built for privacy and for safety against marauding pirates.
A great effort is been made by local residents and businessmen to preserve the characteristics and beauty of this traditional settlement, and many of the original houses that had fallen into disrepair, have been restored to their former glory.

Fira Santorini: Fira is the capital of Santorini, Greece, and the most important of all villages. It is located at the west side of the island and 10 km away from the main port, Athinios. Fira has 1,600 permanent inhabitants. It is perched on the edge of an impressive cliff, at a height of 260 meters offering a great panoramic view over the submerged volcano.

Fira, Santorini | A Walking Tour of a Greek Island Paradise
Thanks to NGreyTravels for some amazing footage of Fira in Santorini, Greece. This Mediterranean island was once a larger island, but thousands of years ago a volcanic eruption blew most of the island apart, leaving a ring of islands that surround an underwater dormant volcanic caldera.
You can reach the island of Santorini by taking a Ferry from the mainland of Greece, or by booking a cruise on one of the many cruise lines that visit Santorini on a weekly basis.
When the cruise ships are in port the town can be quite crowded, as many people come to check out the iconic sunsets that happen nightly on the island. If you wish to have a more intimate experience in Santorini, we highly recommend that you book a stay in one of the resorts.
If you can afford the luxury accommodations, you can also book a suite with a private plunge pool on the patio overlooking the Mediterranean to give you a private and relaxing view of the sunset.

Looking for things to do in Santorini? Well this is the video for you. We spent a day discovering some less explored areas of Santorini to find hidden gems and amazing views of the island.
We started in the town we were staying in the centre of the island called Vothonas. Here we checked out some old caves in the side of the hill that were formerly homes. We took a bit of a walk and then gave our tour of our AirBNB.

After that we took our car rental and headed to the small and quiet town of Pyrgos, here you find the pretty streets and blue domes that you picture in Santorini but without all the people. You also have great views over the island.
Next we drove to the lighthouse at the very tip of the island to called Akrotiri. A lot of people go there to watch the sunsets but during the day there weren’t too many people there. From here you can see the entire island of Santorini. We flew the drone to get some better views.
Santorini is known for its wine so lastly we headed to a winery called Venetsanos to do a wine tasting and because the winery is right on the edge of a cliff, we enjoyed the most amazing views of the island.
Santorini:
Santorini is an island in Greece, located in the Aegean Sea, 200 km southeast of Athens, 150 km south of Mykonos, and 140 km north of Crete. Flights to Santorini take 4 hours from London, 3.5 hours from Paris, 2 hours from Rome, and 1 hour from Athens.
The towns of Fira, Oia, Firostefani, Imerovigli, and Akrotiri cling to the 300m cliffs and have magical views of the caldera and volcano to the west. The beach towns of Kamari, Perissa, Perivolos, and Agios Georgios are on the east and south sides of the island (not the caldera). For most travelers, the best place to stay in Santorini is along the caldera.
Pyrgos:
Pyrgos village is situated in the centre of Santorini, 8km southeast of Fira. Pyrgos is built like an amphitheater at the top of a hill. This amazing point offers some of the best view of the island. With only 700 inhabitants, Pyrgos is one of the most vivid settlements of Santorini all year round. The hillside villages are a protected settlement in 1995. Some of the most famous landmarks are the ruins of the Venetian fortification castle or kasteli as the locals call it.
Trekkers will find amazing natural beauty around Pyrgos. Among others there is the old Medieval path that leads from Pyrgos to Emporeio village (1 hour and 30 minutes).
Akrotiri:
The Akrotiri peninsula is known of course for the famous ruins from the Minoan period. The actual village of Akrotiri is not as well known and that is for a number of reasons. The main reason is that the road to the archaeological site does not even go through the town. Tourists see the site and then head for the next spot on their itinerary or else to the beach. Very few go to the village. So on the island that is probably the most popular tourist destinations in Greece there is a village with many of the qualities of a remote island.
You will find amazing historical sites, great views and nearby beaches to visit. Definitely a must in Santorini.
Venetsanos winery:
Venetsanos winery is located right above the port of Athinios, overlooking the magnificent caldera of Santorini. The Venetsanos family has a very long tradition in producing wine. Originally was produced for the island and subsequently it was exported extensively, and particularly to countries such as Russia. It was built in 1947 by Venetsanos family and became the first industrial winery on the island. Its most distinguished feature is the structural design, which essentially used gravity, facilitating energy efficiency, at a time when access to electricity and other energy sources was very limited.

At the foot of the Messavouno mountain range, Kamari is one of the most beautiful seaside resorts in Santorini stretching over five kilometers of black sand beach. Just the time to go to the monastery Mount Profitis Ilias which rises to almost 600 meters and we arrive at the charming village of Pyrgos which is worth visiting for its many Orthodox churches, its narrow streets and its traditional houses.

Kamari is a seaside village on the southeast side of Santorini, an island that is part of the Cyclades group of Greek islands. It has a long black sand and shingle beach where topless sunbathing is common place. Though there are many taverns, bars and clubs Kamari has a far more relaxed atmosphere than Thira. There are all the usual water based activities plus a regular water taxi to take you round the headland to neighboring Perissa.

Ancient Thira is literally above Kamari. There are buses available to take you to the top but you can walk or drive. The drive is up a cobble-stone cliff-side twisty road and requires not only confidence behind the wheel but the ability to ignore your scared passengers who are actually looking down. The site is open from 10-1430 most days (closed on mondays). The walk takes about an hour and is quite steep. The walking trail to the ancient Thira is the path that had been used from the olden times. It goes through the stones, plants, bushes and is very steep and tiring.

There is an outdoor cinema about a 20 minute walk from the beach that has one showing everyday at 21:30. The film they show changes every few days but they are published in its leaflet which can be found in most towns around the island (there is a poster board just south of the bus station in Thira). The films it shows tends to be American blockbusters (recently it has been playing Iron Man 2 and The Ghost Writer) but it also shows some Greek movies (e.g. The King of Mykonos). Tickets are €7 and there is a bar on site. Smoking is acceptable and even dogs are left in to watch the movie with their owners. If you manage to stay near Kamari coast in the early morning, you would not want to miss the heavenly view of the Sun rise directly from the sea.

Climb the mountain! There are both road and foot paths to the top. See the view from the monastery. It is quite spectacular. The monastery itself is usually closed, but on rare occasions, you can visit. If on foot, you can take a path down the other side of the mountain to Kamari or Perissa, and see Ancient Thira along the way. Note that the path is not marked -- heading up, it comes off of the left side of the road, very close to the top.
