I flew down to Zürich and took a train to get into the mountains with Grindelwald being my first stop. The location of Grindelwald is very unique providing one of the most stunning panoramas in Switzerland as it faces the mountains of Eiger, Jungfrau and Mönch. The ski area of Grindelwald-First offers some of the best views - especially from the breathtaking First Cliff Walk…but it is also a good spot to try the hearty Swiss cuisine before hitting the slopes again and finish it all off with some proper after ski drinks at the mountain huts or the Bus Stop bar.
From Grindelwald we took the Jungfraubahn train to the Jungfraujoch aka the „Top of Europe“ on 2571m where the highest railway station is located. The Jungfraujoch offers an outstanding view to the Aletsch glacier and the surrounding Alps from the viewing platform at the Sphinx observatory. But you can even go inside the glacier if you visit the ice palace underneath the building!
I finished this trip with a skiing day in the ski area of Hasliberg-Meiringen just a 2h picturesque train ride from Grindelwald.

10 Foods You Must Try in the Swiss Mountains
Between Cheeses, Dried Meats, Fresh Fishes or Wild Plants, without forgetting lots of different drinks, the beautiful landscapes of Switzerland offer a lot of palatable experiences.
We have been invited by the Region Jura & Three Lakes to discover some of its best products and we totally fell for them! And not only because we had Absinthe just before :) Here are our top 10 :
1. Lake Fishes, among which trouts, pikes or perchs
2. Absinthe, because in case you didn't know the Green Fairy was born in the core of Jura, between Switzerland and France.
3. Tête de Moine, the famous Rose Cheese is made in a few farms in this part of West Switzerland
4. Damassine, a really flavorful (and strong) Prune Alcohol whose fruit is said to have been originally imported from Damas, Syria. In this video, we were randomly invited by really nice Swiss friends whose homemade Damassine was a hit for us!
5. Wild plants are everywhere, and especially where we don't look. I can now definitely say the best oregano ever was not grown!
6. Cheese fondue, but also raclette, mountain cheeses, croûte and a lot of other cheese speciality. Shall we remind you what Swiss is known for?
7. Rösti! Not especially a regional specialty, but this potato dish is definitely to try in the country and a must-have during the Swiss national day.
8. Toétché, a traditional cottage cheese savoury cake whose flavour and texture are really unique
9. Chasselas, a wine grape typical from the region that produces a crisp and fresh white wine, that surprisingly goes really well with cheese :)
10. Saucisson de Neuchatel is a smoked and hearty sausage from the city of Neuchatel, here cooked in red wine. From the region of course.
Let's add chocolate, dried meats, horse meat and a lot more cheeses, and you'll never come back from the area :)

Golden Pass Line from Zweisimmen to Montrex Switzerland in March 2019

The Golden Pass line, an extraordinary journey in different trains, with a panoramic view of breathtaking scenery. A never-ending spectacle of three mountain passes, the famous 4000 meter Alpine peaks, 8 lakes and unforgettable excursions.
The Golden Pass route
The Golden Pass starts in German speaking Lucerne and ends in French speaking Montreux. Towns along the way are Meiringen, Interlaken, Spiez, Zweisimmen and Gstaad.
Section 1: Lucerne to Interlaken Ost
The trains on this section are referred to as the Luzern-Interlaken Express. The train departs from Lucerne and passes the foot of the Pilatus mountain. You can see Lake Lucerne every now and then, but you will soon leave it behind you. You'll pass two more lakes, the Sarnersee and the Lungernsee, before the train starts climbing the Brünig Pass. The pass has an altitude of 1008 m, which isn't very high for Swiss standards. Next, the train has to descend 413 m to reach Meiringen at 595 m on the valley floor, and it uses the cogwheel track to do so.
The train changes direction in Meiringen. A flat stretch through the Hasli valley follows before the train reaches Brienz along beautiful Lake Brienz. About 20 minutes later the train arrives in Interlaken Ost (East), which is the gateway to the Jungfrau region.
Sit on the right side of the train for the best view of the lakes and the view while descending from the pass down to Meiringen.

Section 2: Interlaken Ost to Zweisimmen
First the train runs along the river Aare to the other side of Interlaken. It continues its way to Spiez, a town at a scenic location along Lake Thun. You can easily see the pyramid shaped Mount Niesen from here.
The Golden Pass line proceeds into the Simmen valley; a typically Swiss green valley with farms, small villages, forests and surrounded by mountains.
You can best sit on the right side for the view on Lake Thun, but this is only a short section.
Section 3: Zweisimmen to Montreux
First the train climbs to the highest point of the entire Golden Pass line, near Saanenmöser, at 1279 m. Next up is the upper class town of Gstaad, with luxurious shops and hotels. Soon after you will leave the German speaking part of Switzerland and enter the French speaking part.
The train winds its way through the valley, which is quite narrow in some places. The valley ends in a tunnel that leads to Les Avants. From there, Montreux is just 3 km as the crow flies, but there are still 578 m to descend. Cogwheel track and many curves are necessary to complete the last 20 minutes of the journey, and you will have a wonderful view of Lake Geneva along the way.
It does not matter that much on which side of the train you sit. We think the right side provides a slightly better view.
What's the best leg of the route?
All sections are worth your time. If we necessarily had to choose a section it would be section 3, Zweisimmen to Montreux. This is where the line is at its narrowest, tram-like sometimes, and the descent to Montreux with the view of Lake Geneva is absolutely beautiful.
If you don't have the time to do the complete Golden Pass route, just pick the section that is closest to your base town. If you are based in the Bernese Oberland, then consider this round trip:
Take the Golden Pass train to Zweisimmen and Montreux;
Spend some time in Montreux;
Take a train to Brig;
Take a local train via Goppenstein and Kandersteg to Spiez;
Take a train to Interlaken.
Dates of operation
The trains operate all year round.
Tip: check the timetable before you start your trip.
Note that the Golden Pass line is being renovated until 2022, particularly between Zweisimmen and Montreux. This will result in improved rolling stock, and direct trains from Interlaken to Montreux without a switch in Zweisimmen.
The GoldenPass MOB Panoramic coaches with VIP seats are being renovated and will therefor not be available until 2020. Regular panoramic coaches will be available.
Whether or not your trip will be affected by the renovations can be found in the timetable.
TIMETABLE
Check the timetable of trains on the Golden Pass trains line. To be sure to travel via the Golden Pass line, enter the via-stations Meiringen and Zweisimmen. Between Zweisimmen and Montreux, trains labeled IR or PE are the official Golden Pass trains. If you click on them they are specified as MOB Belle Epoque or MOB Panoramic. On other parts of the routes, the type of train does not matter.
Plan your trip
