The Avas is a hill of volcanic origin in Miskolc, Hungary. Its top is the highest point of Miskolc proper . On the top stands a TV tower with observation deck which is a former symbol of the city and provides a nice panorama. The name of the hill is an archaic Hungarian word meaning forbidden. It was named that at a time it was forbidden for shepherds to graze their herds there because the old wine cellars threatened with caving in. In the early 20th century several prehistoric artefacts were found in the Avas, proving that a people belonging to the Neolithic Szeleta culture lived here. The limestone caves of Avas, that were once used by prehistoric men, are now used as wine cellars; the narrow, winding streets give a Mediterranean atmosphere to this part of Avas Hill. These thermal cave baths in Miskolc, Hungary are so cool! We got there first thing in the morning and practically had the whole place to ourselves. Next we visited the exhibits at the Ottó Herman and Pannon Sea Museums. The best part of the day? Entrance to all of these places was completely free with our pass!

FOREST TRAINS & CASTLES in MISKOLC, HUNGARY

Another wonderful day in Miskolc! We rode a scenic forest train through the Bükk mountains to Lillafüred and enjoyed beautiful views by the lake. Then we went to check out the medieval Castle of Diósgyőr. It was a really beautiful day exploring the outdoors in Miskolc!

We were able to see and do so much all thanks to our Miskolc pass and would definitely recommend it when you're visiting the city:

The Miskolctapolca Cave Bath is a thermal bath in a natural cave in Miskolctapolca, which is part of the city of Miskolc, Hungary.

The Castle of Diósgyőr is a medieval castle in the historical town of Diósgyőr which is now part of the Northern Hungarian city Miskolc.

The Hunguest Hotel Palota (Lillafüred, ) is set in a circa-1930 castle and surrounded by a park, this imposing hotel is a 5-minute walk from the limestone Anna Cave, 7 km from the Castle of Diósgyőr and 10 km from Miskolc.
