Cushendun Caves - Close to Ballymena, County Antrim
Cushendun Caves in Cushendun - close to Ballymena, County Antrim - is a hidden famous landmark in Northern Ireland. Cushendun itself is a small coastal village between Cushendall and Ballycastle with a lovely beach and some nice restaurants. Well worth a stop if passing by. The road north along the coast from the village gives amazing view points.
Even though this is one famous touristic place to be visited in Northern Ireland, we have to say that its appearance in the famous Game of Thrones movie series helped in making it that much famous and well known, and also the reason why lots of people are adding it to the list of places they want to visit in Northern Ireland (
The Cushendun Caves were formed 400 million years back due to the extreme weather conditions that the country was passing through. These caves - and from their name - are located in the small coastal village known as Cushendun in county Antrim, Northern Ireland. Cushendun has a sheltered harbour and it lies at the mouth of the River Dun and Glendun, one of the nine Glens of Antrim.
The beauty of the place is not the only thing to grab your attention to the place and make you more interested in walking through its passages, but also the views which it could offer on the clear days are magnificent; Cushenden could provide a good view over the Mull of Kintyre in Scotland which is only 15 miles away.
You might hear about a specific place but never get the encouragement needed to go and check it yourself, which is exactly what happened with lots of local Irish people as well as those who are visiting the county for the first time; they might have heard about Cushendun Caves but never actually decided to visit it until they saw the way they were brought on television and delivered through those outstanding pictures and scenes in Game of Thrones.

At some point, there was a tour which we as a family decided to make and go on and which included Cushenden, Ballintoy, and Torr Head and which we also considered it one tour related to Game of Thrones that is also part of the Causeway Coastal Route (
Since Cushendun Caves is located in county Antrim then we should never forget that there are lots of famous destinations to be found there. One of our favorite places in county Antrim is Antrim Castle Gardens ( which is one of the most beautiful places there and which is also considered a great destination when it comes to specific times of the year such as Christmas in which an event is held there to celebrate it differently giving children and adults the chance to enjoy their time (
In addition to Antrim Castle Gardens, there are other options which one could go to and which include Knockagh Monument ( and Ballycastle ( which are also both considered part of county Antrim and which one could check while being around the area.
Northern Ireland is filled with lots of locations and historical buildings which one could visit and some of these places are even considered part of nature's creations. Kissing the BLARNEY STONE!: Ireland Day 5 (Part 1)
This is Day 5 of our Ireland vacation (Part 1)! :)
Since we stayed the night in a hostel in Cork we were all ready to head to the Blarney Castle the next morning to kiss the Blarney Stone! Blarney is about 5 miles outside of Cork. Parking was free, but entry to the castle was €13 for adults and €11 for students. Legend states that kissing the Blarney Stone will give the kisser the Gift of Gab which I sometimes desperately need as you've seen in other videos bloopers! ;) They also often describe it as the ability to deceive without offending, but I'd never want to deceive someone.
Blarney Castle was built and rebuilt multiple times throughout history. The first version was built in 1446 by Cormick McCarthy. The McCarthy clan of Muskerry is one of the most ancient clan in all of Ireland and one member was converted over to Christianity by Saint Patrick!
Once you enter the castle you can go from room to room or follow the signs straight to a highly steep set of spiraling stone stairs (say that 5 times fast!) with a rope hanging down the center to grab onto. The top of the castle gives an amazing views of it's surrounding! Signs with information on the Blarney Stone, it's history, and the castle were all around to read as you waited in line.
We began getting nervous as we watched other people kissing the stone. A man helped you get into position while another took your picture. Luckily they allow you to take pictures or videos of your own since theirs cost €10 each! To reach the stone you had to lie on your back and lean over backwards. You could see straight down to the ground! From our angle we didn't notice the metal bars until after we had kissed the stone.
We were excited to find out that there was a lot more to the grounds than just the castle and dungeons and we did our best to explore all we could in the time we had there. My favourite area to wander was the Poison Garden which had a ton of herbs and plants I had only previously read about in Harry Potter (my hands-down all time most beloved book series). There's also the Blarney House (which was closed while we were there), trails to stroll by a river in the woods, a fern garden complete with artificial waterfall, and Beaver Cave.

Kissing the Blarney Stone and the Legend Behind It!
No visit to Ireland is complete without visiting Blarney Castle and kissing the famous and infamous Blarney Stone. By kissing the Blarney Stone, you are supposed to now have the Gift of Eloquence and the Gift of Gab. There are several versions of the legend of how the Blarney Stone got its powers, which I include in the video. I enjoyed the whole experience, including seeing both the exterior and interior of the castle itself, which was built in 1446.

The Glen of Aherlow is a valley between the Galtee Mountains and the Slievenamuck Hills in South County Tipperary. The glen is approximately 14 kilometres long by 3 kilometres wide. The rich agricultural land is used for dairy farming and beef fattening. Sheep farming is carried out on the slopes of the Galtee Mountains. Coniferous forests cover the Slievenamuck hills and the lower slopes of the Galtee Mountains.
Lake Muskry was gouged out of the mountain by glaciers during the last Ice Age.
The Galtee Mountains rise steeply from the surrounding land and are Irelands highest inland mountain range, Galteemore is the highest peak.
The local villages are Galbally, Lisvernane and Bansha.
The landscape includes, mountains, hills, lakes, rivers, archaeological sites and rural villages.
The outdoor activities available in the Glen of Aherlow, included are - walking, cycling, horseback riding and fishing.
Accommodation available includes, Hotels, Castles, Historic Houses, Bed and breakfast, self-catering cabins, two caravan and camping parks.
Nightlife. There are many pubs with live music which also serve food.
Within a short drive are some of Irelands best known tourist attractions, included are - Lough Gur, Cahir Castle, Athassel Abbey, Holycross Monastic Village and Cashel.
There are good Motorway, Bus and Railway connections to the rest of Ireland

Mitchell Caverns Have REOPENED!
After being closed for nearly seven years, Mitchell Caverns in Providence Mountains State Park have finally reopened and tours are getting filled up fast! Surrounded by Mojave National Preserve, they are the only limestone caves in California's state park system. It is truly a breathtaking experience to see these amazing caves with so many interesting and unique formations like cave shields, columns, cave coral and helictites, as well as the more common, yet still impressive, stalactites and stalagmites.
