Slovenia is without a doubt a gorgeous country with gorgeous towns, beautiful mountains, and so much greenery. From Zagreb, I caught a bus to the small not so touristy town of Novo Mesto, a place I discovered at my former work desk. Here I was welcomed by a couchsurfer who was willing to show me around Novo Mesto town and castles in the surrounding area. In his home, he served me delicious food, local wine, Cviček, and gave me lessons on how to stand and jump on a snowboard.
Since I wanted to avoid paying for a bus and wanted to give hitchhiking a shot again, I hitchhiked to Ljubljana with a friendly local who ended up treating me to a beer. Ljubljana is a beautiful and romantic city with a triple bridge and fortress in the city center. Ljubljana is a big small city that is enjoyable for all kinds of people.
I love train travel, so i took advantage of riding a short train north west to the small town of Skofja Loka. I stayed in a centrally located Airbnb with awesome hosts who showed me around a bit to the beautiful town. It has an old bridge built in the 14th century.
From here, I reunited with my friend from Novo Mesto to utilize those snowboarding skills in the Julian Alps. We took a ride to Bohinj and snowboarded for several hours at Vogel. For the first time, Iwas rusty but in a few hours, I learned how to snowboard. By the way, it was early May and the last day of the season with good snow on the mountain. :)
A short car ride away, my buddy and I parted ways and I spend two days enjoying the gorgeous picturesque town of Bled. I walked around the lake, visited the nearby Vintgary gorge and enjoyed some infamous Bled cake. My next and last stop as well as the northernmost point of my voyage in the Balkans was to the small town of Mojstrana. Here a local in Bled told me about a waterfall I should visit near the town in Triglav National Park. After about an hour an change, I made it to Pericnik waterfall. That concludes the end of that directional voyage only to begin a long voyage along the Adriatic coast of Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, and eventually, Greece. Cheers :)

The Best Waterfall in Slovenia: Perichnik
Mojstrana is an alpine village situated at an elevation of 661m. The two rivers Triglavska Bistrica and Sava Dolinka meet here forming the River Sava, the longest river in Slovenia. Mojstrana is one of the entrances to the Triglav national park from the north and has been known for its healthy climate for many years.
The first written records of Mojstrana go back to the year 1590. The name of the village supposedly indicated a large number of tradesmen (mojster = a tradesman) which is still reflected in the house names today. The history of Mojstrana is closely connected to iron and cement. Before WWI, deposits of iron ore and a big cement factory offered work to the locals. During both Wars tourism became very popular and tourists, mountaineers and hunters liked to visit the place. Today the village has about 1200 inhabitants.
You can visit St Clemens's chuch, the Slovenian alpine museum, and see very old authentic houses. Some important Slovenian sportsmen came from Mojstrana: the ski jumpers Janez Polda and Marjan Pečar, the alpine skiers Alenka Dovžan and Jure Košir, and the sport climber Martina Čufar. 18 sportsmen who were born in Mojstrana represented our country in the Olympic Games.
Mojstrana is the gateway to three magnificent valleys at the heart of the Triglav National Park, Vrata, Krmo and Kot. We invite you to enjoy the many outdoor activities or simply relax in the quiet, natural setting.
The tourist information office is in the centre of Mojstrana. In the summer season it is open every day and in the winter season at weekends.
Peričnik Falls is one of the best-known waterfalls in Slovenia. It flows from a hanging valley in Triglav National Park into the glacial Vrata Valley, where the water of Peričnik Creek then flows into Bistrica Creek. There are actually two waterfalls: Upper Peričnik Falls (Slovene: Zgornji Peričnik, 16 meters or 52 feet high) and Lower Peričnik Falls (Slovene: Spodnji Peričnik, 52 meters or 171 feet high). The larger, lower waterfall is usually simply known as Peričnik Falls. A view of both falls is possible by crossing Bistrica Creek and ascending the scree slope a few dozen meters.

다음 날, 이른 아침부터 짐을 꾸려 찾아간 곳은 오스트리아와 이탈리아 그리고 슬로베니아, 3국의 국경지대 크란스카고라다. 이곳 역시 율리안알프스 산맥에 속하기 때문에 장엄한 자연 경관을 지니고 있다. “슬로베니아 사람들이 인생에서 꼭 한번 올라간다는 산이 어디에요?” “제일 높은 트리글라우 산 입니다” 슬로베니아의 명산 트리글라우를 이웃하고 있는 크란스카고라. 트리글라우 산과 율리안알프스 산맥의 모습을 한 번에 보기 위해 이 트래킹 코스를 선택했다. 크란스카고라로 향하는 길 아래, 사바돌린카 강이 흐른다. 이곳에서도 어김없이 낚시꾼들을 만날 수 있다. 유럽에서 가장 아름다운 빙하 계곡 중 하나인 이곳, 계곡을 따라 흐르는 빙하수가 굽이굽이 길을 내어 사바돌린카 강줄기를 만들어냈다. 청정한 물빛에 또 다시 발걸음을 멈췄다. 블레드 호수와는 달리 이곳에선 플라잉피쉬가 한창이다. “송어예요” “무지개 빛깔이네요” “네! 무지개 송어예요” 강 상류나 산 속 호수 등, 낮은 온도의 물에서만 산다는 무지개 송어. 사바돌린카 강은 차고 빠른 물살로 강태공들의 또 다른, 도전욕구를 불러일으키는 곳이다. 다시 길을 따라 크란스카고라를 걸었다. 이곳이 차로 오를 수 있는 마지막 구간이다. 1,611m부턴 걷는 것 외엔 정상으로 향하는 다른 방도가 없다. 여행자들은 대부분 이곳에서 트래킹을 시작한다. 슬레메 정상까지 높이 차는 약 300미터에 불과하지만 오르는 데만 꼬박 2시간 30분이 걸린다. 빙하가 깎인 지형이라 경사도 만만치 않다. “안녕하세요~” “한국사람이시군요! 멋지네요” “정상은 어때요?” “정말 아름답습니다. 제대로 즐기실 수 있을 거예요. 그런데 서두르지는 마시고 천천히 올라가셔야 해요” “연세가 어떻게 되세요?” “73살이요. 제 동행들은 70살이고요. 트리글라우 정상에 올라가려면 처음부터 너무 많이 걸으면 안 돼요. 한 번, 두 번 와보면서 조금씩 트레이닝 해야 돼요” 율리안 알프스의 고봉들을 한번이라도 등반하지 않은 사람은 진정한 슬로베니아인이 아니라고 생각하는 이곳 사람들. 이 산을 오를수록 그 자부심이 몸소 느껴진다. 이 길엔 과거, 만년설과 함께 쓸려 내려온 자갈이 많아 미끄러지지 않도록 조심스레 올라가야한다. 앞서 가던 가이드가 잠시 멈춰섰다. 고산에서 구름을 벗 삼아 피고 진다는 희귀 꽃을 발견해 소개시켜 준다. 고귀한 알프스의 꽃, 에델바이스도 보인다. 길은 점점 더 험해지고 길 옆 낭떠러지는 고개를 돌려 내려다보기가 아찔할 정도로 가파르다. 조심스런 발걸음 끝에 드디어 슬레메 뷰포인트에 도착했다. “율리안알프스에 오신 것을 환영합니다” “트리글라우는 어디죠?” “저기에요. 보이세요? 정말 멋지죠” 슬로베니아의 지붕이자 알프스 산맥의 끝을 알리는 산, 트리글라우의 위엄이 바로 눈앞에 우뚝 솟아 있다. 해발 2,864m의 정상은 구름도 피해간다. 발아래에 트리글라우 국립공원이 펼쳐져 있다. 진정한 율리안 알프스를 한 눈에 볼 수 있다. “정말 아름다워요. 슬로베니아에 처음 왔는데 이제야 실감이 나네요” “정말 높네요. 공기가 상쾌해요. 슬로베니아 사람들은 산에 모든 걱정과 스트레스를 내려놓고 온다고 믿어요” 이 경관 앞에서 걱정과 스트레스는 이미 잊은 지 오래다.

Slovenia in winter time, Triglav national park
Slovenia doesn´t fall in sleep during winter! In all, there are 87 ski resorts in Slovenia, 10 of which are of a major scale, 18 medium sized and 59 more compact ski villages. The total area of resorts amounts to 1300 hectares, comprising of 300 km of ski runs, 280 km cross-country paths and 24 km of sledging tracks. Our ski resorts are subject to continual improvement and, year on year, management and safety levels have been repeatedly increased. To ensure full season skiing almost three quarters of all tracks are supplemented by artificial snow making.
Tracks for cross-country skiers wind their way past picturesque lakes and over plateaus such as in Pokljuka where, every year, the world biathlon championships take place, or across Bloke Plateau, one of Europe’s oldest ski bowls. Cross-country tracks are well established in the Logarska Valley and can frequently be found close to some of Slovenia’s smaller and more popular local resorts.
Other more unexpected Winter pursuits include snowmobiling in Kranjska Gora, Pohorje, Pokljuka and Krvavec and, in some places, dog and horse-driven sledge rides. Around any of Slovenia’s resorts, for five minutes of fun you can grab a one or two man sled and speed downhill on numerous toboggan tracks, or sledge downhill on snowy roads that cross mountain passes (normally closed in winter) organised by qualified sports agencies (Mangart).
Bled lake
In the middle of Bled lake you will find the only slovenian island but its uniqueness makes it more attractive for many than known archipelagos.Surrounded by the mountains of the Julian Alps , the island reigns in the middle of an Alpine lake. Folk custom is that you need to ring a bell in island church, for good fortune
Bled was mentioned for the first time in 1004 when than German emperor, Henry II, gifted it to the Bishop of Brixen. Only at the beginning of 19th century Bled started his transformation in a lively tourist spot, known today. Swiss Arnold Rikli, discovered that the gentle climate and the lake and thermal waters are a source of good health and well-being. At the beginning of the 20th century Bled lake, then part of Austrian empirea, already attracted European aristocratic elite and famous people of that time.
With a millennium of history, Bled has retained its old traditions and created new ones.Since the 1960s, has a large selection of hotels, restaurants, sports facilities and casinos. Todays Bled is also know as congress center, meeting place for enterprises and there is even an internationally renowned managment school.
Kranjska Gora
The white soul of Kranjska Gora was always Alpine skiing. A special characteristic of the skiing offers of Kranjska Gora is the diversity of the slopes offering quality skiing to both beginners and experienced skiers alike.Place for themselves on the ski slopes will find also Snowboarders, the experienced and the begginers.
Best thing about Kranjska Gora is that you can step onto the ski slope, directly by stepping out of bed. The only thing between your hotel and the ski trails is the snow beach, where ski instructors, with the help of a baby lift and various animating obstacles, teach your children to ski.
If you do not ski but have the will to do so, they will find a patient instructor and lend you the ski equipment so that you can go down the hill of the beginner’s pist already on your first day. With time, you will advance on the scale of terrain difficulty and might someday even try out the competition run in Podkoren, the annual contest of the Alpine Skiing World Cup.
Ski Resort Krvavec
Situated in Municipality of Cerklje, is the closest Ski Resort to an international airport in Europe. The Ski Resort has 30km of good-maintained ski runs on 1,450m to 1,971m above sea level, thus providing excellent conditions for skiing on natural and artificial snow. Due to the centre's favourable position, the skiing season usually starts as early as the end of November and may last over 150 days until early May. The Krvavec ski resort guarantees 100 skiing days each season. The ski pists are varied and ideal for both beginers and professional skiers. The rich additional package includes a Ski School, rental and service of ski equipment, a polygon for beginners and a children’s playground, and thus attracts and delights many visitors. Krvavec also offers rich selections of ski bars and cottages. It is one of most popular ski resorts in Slovenia and especially popular with Ljubljanians, who need less than 40 minutes to reach it.

Dashcam - Villach, Austria to Bled, Slovenia - 11 April 2015
This covers the route from Villach, Austria to Bled, Slovenia. Normally, you'd just take the Autobahn through the Karawanken Tunnel and then take a right off the freeway to Lake Bled, but.. that's the boring way to go.
This route starts at the base of Wurzen Pass just outside of Villach. Over the pass into Slovenia. Left turn at Podkoren and along the 201. Right turn at Mojstrana and then it follows the 907 through the Triglavski Narodni Park. A lot of this is just a gravel track barely more than one car wide. It rejoins civilization at Krnica and passes through Zgornje Gorje and Spodnje Gorje. Then on to Bled and Lake Bled, ending on the south shore.

Alpe Adria Trail, Kranjska Gora to Trenta – Pal Mont
We are in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, where we arrived yesterday night after walking here from the Italian town of Tarvisio, following the waymarks of the Alpe Adria Trail. Today, we hike through the Triglav National Park. The first half of this leg runs in a beautiful forest and passes by a Russian church with a sad story. In 1915, the Austro-Hungarian authorities ordered the construction of a military road across the Vršič Pass, to be carried out by Russian prisoners of war. In March 1916, approximately 300 prisoners died in an avalanche. This chapel was built by the survivors as a memorial to their deceased fellows. In the afternoon, we arrive at Vršič Pass and admire the dazzling landscape at our feet. On our way down towards the little village of Trenta, we miss some waymarks which are probably covered in snow, and we get lost. Well, not completely lost, but it takes us some time to find the track again. In the meantime, the sun goes down and we find ourselves in the middle of the forest in total darkness. But don’t worry, in the end we reach Trenta!
