Rock City: I Can See Seven States, then Nashville - Traveling Robert
Great American Road Trip 2016 Part 2
On this week's video we visit a famous roadside attraction near Chattanooga, Tennessee called Rock City. Rock city is located on the Georgia side of the border, on top of the Lookout Mountain Ridge.
Rock City became a tourist attraction back in the early 1930s, at the site of a community called Fairyland, founded by one Garnet Carter and his wife Frieda. These rock formations happened to be inside the Fairyland community, and it was Frieda’s idea to develop this part of the property into a great rock garden, with all kinds of plants, trails around the rocks, and statues of gnomes and other fairytale characters imported from Germany. They claim that you can see seven states from the top of the mountain: Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama. While on a clear day you can see the Smoky Mountains, that's still the Tennessee side. I don't have hard evidence of this but I have read that Kentucky, Virginia, and South Carolina are below the horizon, so the only way you could see them is if the Earth was flat.
In Rock City we also enjoy the music of Matt Downer - Old Time Traveler, an Alabama native and Chattanooga resident. He plays the fiddle, the banjo, and the guitar, and he has dedicated his career to the preservation of traditional music. He has studied the repertoire and techniques of many of the elder Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia musicians, so he is the real deal. What a treat it is to listen to his music.
As we continue towards Nashville we run into some trouble climbing the Cumberland Plateau , also known Monteagle Mountain. The car started overheating on the long 5% grade. While technically not a mountain, Monteagle got it's popular culture name due to a Johnny Cash song describing this treacherous portion of the road.

Cumberland Caverns Virtual Tour - Home of Bluegrass Underground
My son and I recently went to Cumberland Caverns in McMinnville TN to take a tour of the Caves there. After having lived in Cookeville TN for many years of my life, I can't believe I never took thecumberland caverns mcminnville tn time to go visit!
Cumberland Caverns is a great place to take the family and if you're a cave enthusiast or like to hike, this is such a cool place. It is a US National Landmark and it's been opened to the public for over 50 years. There are many large rooms throughout the daily tour which took about an hour and a half to walk through.

There are several tours available to the public and you could spend a couple of days going through them. Cumberland Caverns also offers overnight stays and special events so make sure to check out their upcoming schedule for full details of times, availability, etc.
Bluegrass Underground Live Music
Now this is pretty cool! The Bluegrass Underground offers live music at least once a month and bluegrass undergroundyou can hear a concert inside the cave. They've had great musicians there such as Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs and many more. I believe it holds 700-900 people and they say the music sounds great. I'd love to check it out sometime as we love Bluegrass Music and Country Music as well.

Raccoon Mountain Caverns outside of Chattanooga TN is a must see. During the late 1920’s, local farmers would come by the exposed limestone rocks at the bottom of Raccoon Mountain known as Mount Aetna. They would sit on hot afternoons as they enjoyed the cool air which would blow from the cracks in the limestone rocks. In late 1929, they invited Leo Lambert, the famous caver who discovered Ruby Falls the year before, to explore the area for a cave. After crawling through a small opening he found this beautiful cave. He opened it as a tourist attraction and spent the next several years working on trails around the Crystal Palace Room. Named the cave “Tennessee Caverns” and it opened to the public on June 28, 1931. The original tour now known as the Lambert Tour circled the Crystal Palace Room which was believed to be the largest room in the cave until Some twenty years after its opening, the Smith Brothers managing the cave discovered a small hole just off the Crystal Palace Room. It is said that it was so tight that they had to exhale so they could squeeze through the tiny opening. About twenty feet later, they found the passage opening into a larger room and continued their discoveries. Eventually they were able to enlarge the tour to include these newly discovered areas. Today, this tour is known as The Crystal Palace Tour. To date, 5 1/2 miles of passageways have been found and mapped over, with new discoveries still being made. Over the years, the name of the cave was changed from Tennessee Caverns to Crystal City Caves to Crystal Caverns and eventually to its current name, Raccoon Mountain Caverns in the late 1970’s. Today, they are home to not only a spectacular cave, but a beautiful campground, featuring full service RV sites, water and electric sites, primitive tent sites, and cabins.
GEOLOGY Raccoon Mountain Caverns is located in a band of limestone from the Monteagle Formation, which formed during the Mississippian Period (approximately 320-360 million years ago), on the bottom of an ancient sea. In this sea, fragments and shells of various marine animals sank to the bottom and became compacted over time to form limestone rock. We have fossils of crinoids, coral, bryozoans, and echinoderms throughout our cave. Although fossils in the limestone tell us the age of the rock they are not much help in determining the age of the cave. Most caves including ours are less than ten million years old. By the end of the Permian Period about 225 million years ago, tremendous mountain building forces resulting from the collision of the continents forced the seas to retreat and pushed and folded layers of older rocks high above the level of the sea. This produced the anticlines (rocks folded into an arch) and synclines (rocks folded into a “u” shape) which are now the Appalachian Mountains. Raccoon Mountain caverns is at the edge of the Sequatchie Valley which is one of the largest and most spectacular anticlinal valleys in the world. Limestone caves are formed when acids attack and dissolve the calcite contained within limestone. This acid is usually carbonic acid (also known as soda water or carbonated water) which is formed when carbon dioxide combines with water. Most carbon dioxide comes from decaying leaves and vegetation in the soil. Scientists believe that most caves form below the water table by slowly moving water. After a rain, the rainwater mixes with the carbon dioxide in the soil and dissolves the limestone underneath.
Two factors control the formation of cave passageways: vertical and horizontal fractures in the limestone, and the water table. A cave is formed by water moving slowly in the small fractures below the water table. The rate of flow below the fractures changes as some limestone is easier to dissolve than others due to variations in composition. (This is evident at Headache Rock which is viewed along the Crystal Palace Tour.) Some channels grow larger as they take in more water and, as a result, they grow faster. #raccoonmountaintn #raccoonmountaincaverns #raccoonmountaincampground
