Portage la Prairie is a small city in the Central Plains Region of Manitoba, Canada. As of 2016, the population was 13,304 and the land area of the city was 24.68 square kilometres . Portage la Prairie is approximately 75 kilometres west of Winnipeg, along the Trans-Canada Highway , and sits on the Assiniboine River, which flooded the town persistently until a diversion channel north to Lake Manitoba was built to divert the flood waters. It is located 47 kilometres south-west of Morden, Manitoba, Canada on Highway 3, Highway 31, and Highway 201, and covers approximately 1.8 square kilometres . The park is considered to be a Class III protected area under the IUCN protected area management categories.The park was officially opened on October 5, 2001 by Premier Gary Doer and James Richardson, representing the Nature Conservancy of Canada. Lower Fort Garry was built in 1830 by the Hudson's Bay Company on the western bank of the Red River, 20 mi north of the original Fort Garry . Treaty 1 was signed there. A devastating flood destroyed Fort Garry in 1826, prompting the company's then-governor, George Simpson, to search for a safer location down river. Governor Simpson chose the site of Lower Fort Garry because of its high ground and location below the St. Andrew's Rapids, eliminating a time-consuming portage of heavy fur packs and York boats. However, the fort never became the administrative centre it was intended, since most of the population of the area was centred near The Forks and objected to the extra travel required to do business at the new fort. Spruce Woods Provincial Park is located in south-central Manitoba, Canada where the Assiniboine River passes through the delta of sediment left by the last glaciation. An area of open and stabilized sand dunes within the park provides habitat to species of plants and animals not found elsewhere in Manitoba. In descending order of land area contained, the park lies within the Rural Municipalities of South Cypress, Victoria, and North Cypress. The Government of Manitoba designated the area a provincial park in 1964. The park is 269 square kilometres in size.
