The Kinzua Bridge or the Kinzua Viaduct was a railroad trestle that spanned Kinzua Creek in McKean County in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. The bridge was 301 feet tall and 2,052 feet long. Most of its structure collapsed during a tornado in 2003. The bridge was originally built from wrought iron in 1882 and was billed as the Eighth Wonder of the World, holding the record as the tallest railroad bridge in the world for two years. In 1900, the bridge was dismantled and simultaneously rebuilt out of steel to allow it to accommodate heavier trains. Mini Camping Trip to Kinzua Bridge State Park

Doug and I decided to go on a mini camping trip to Kinzua Bridge State Park and the Allegheny National Forest area of Pennsylvania - since 1) I've never been there and it's in my home state and 2) it was the perfect fall weather to do some exploring. If you've never been there, check it out! It's a large railroad bridge that was largely damaged by the power of a tornado. Better yet, it's all amidst some gorgeous forest scenery. I definitely recommend hiking to the bottom after doing the skywalk - down there, you can roam around the ruins which I found to be quite cool. Even though the leaves were past their peak at Kinzua, there were plenty of colorful leaves throughout the National Forest and our campground. Get out there and explore before they're all past their peak and before the cold winter sets in! :-)

Kinzua Bridge State Park

On Monday, July 21, 2003, at approximately 3:15 p.m., an F1 tornado (wind speed 73 -- 112 mph) struck the side of Kinzua Viaduct. Eleven towers from the center of the bridge were torn from their concrete bases and thrown to the valley floor. Fortunately no one was seriously injured. This video shows the remains of the Kinzua Viaduct Bridge. At 2053 feet long and 300 feet high this bridge was at one time the highest railroad viaduct bridge in the world.

They are currently finishing up renovations to the remains of the bridge which will allow people to walk out to the end of the structure. I have heard that this will be complete by the fall of 2011.

Kinzua Skywalk

A more than 100 years old railroad bridge which was destroyed by a tornado in 2003, now re-born as an overlook and skywalk. Video was made on 8th October 2011.
