It is widely considered the third holiest city of Shia Islam, the Shi'ite world's spiritual capital, and the center of Shi'ite political power in Iraq.

    Wadi-us-Salaam is an Islamic cemetery, located in the Shia holy city of Najaf, Iraq. It is the largest cemetery in the world. The cemetery covers 1,485.5 acres and contains tens of millions of bodies. It also attracts millions of pilgrims annually.The cemetery is located near the shrine of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, the fourth Sunni Caliph and the first Shia Imam. Thus, many Shi'ites in Iraq request that they be buried in this cemetery. As a result of improved transportation methods, Shi'ites from across the globe are buried in the cemetery. However, burial at the cemetery means being placed in one of the cemetery’s many catacombs. According to an undertaker at the cemetery, each crypt can hold up to 50 bodies. The burial plots are controlled by Marja'.

Visiting The Great Mosque of Samarra in Iraq and travel the death road.



The 120km from Baghdad north to the holy Shia city Samarra along the highway also known as the “death road” (not to be mistaken by the Highway of Death in Southern Iraq) by American soldiers after the 2003 invasion due to all the IEDs which was laced along the road.

In 2014 ISIS captured this area of Iraq, and the held it up to only a few years back, so there´s no surprise that´s there more than 50 checkpoints put up along the highway. Some often only a few hundred meters between.

It was the center of Imam Ali (as) government and it will be the center of government for his descendent Imam Mehdi (af).
