Nakuru is the fourth-largest city in Kenya after Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu. It is the capital of Nakuru County and former capital of the Rift Valley Province. It had 307,990 inhabitants within its town limits by 2009, making it the largest urban centre in the Kenyan mid-west with Eldoret in Uasin Gishu following closely behind. Nakuru lies about 1,850 m above sea level.

Kariandusi prehistoric site is an archaeological site in Kenya. Located on the southeastern edge of the Great Rift Valley and on Lake Elmenteita, Kariandusi is an African Early Stone Age site dating to approximately 1 million years ago.

Menengai Crater is a massive shield volcano with one of the biggest calderas in the world, in the Great Rift Valley, Kenya. It is the largest volcano caldera in Kenya and the second largest volcano caldera in Africa. Volcanic formed rich loam soils enrich the adjacent farmland arounds its flanks. The crater is on the floor of the Rift Valley. The volcano formed about 200,000 years ago and the prominent 12 x 8 km caldera formed about 8000 years ago. The caldera floor is covered with numerous post caldera lava flows. The Menengai volcano is considered one of the best-preserved Krakatau-style calderas in the world. Lord Egerton Castle is a fortress located 14 km outside Nakuru, Kenya. The foundation was laid in 1938 by Maurice Egerton, 4th Baron Egerton. The architect was Albert Brown. Lake Nakuru is one of the Rift Valley soda lakes at an elevation of 1,754 m above sea level. It lies to the south of Nakuru, in the rift valley of Kenya and is protected by Lake Nakuru National Park. The lake's abundance of algae used to attract a vast quantity of flamingos that famously lined the shore. Other birds also flourish in the area, as do warthogs, baboons and other large mammals. Eastern black rhinos and southern white rhinos have also been introduced. The lake's level dropped dramatically in the early 1990s but has since largely recovered. Travel video about destination Nakuru in Kenya.
Close to Kenya's provincial capital of Nakuru is a unique habitat that extends along Lake Nakuru, a shallow soda lake that is paradise for huge numbers of birdlife. Today there are around four hundred bird species within the nature reserve and on the shores of the lake there are a large variety of impressive mammals. Close to the water there are buffalo even though the strong smell of natron deters them from spending more time in the water than is necessary. The dense acacia forests to the south of the nature reserve have become home to various monkeys, among them the black and white colobus. The eastern shores of the lake are well known for their wonderful vegetation that is unique in Africa and they also contain a magnificent forest of euphorbia trees. The national park is much more than just an important bird reserve as it also plays a vital role in the preservation of various endangered species. Due to the commitment of both animal rights campaigners and environmentalists the unique flora and fauna of NAKURU have been preserved to the present day.
