Nantucket is an island about 30 miles by ferry south from Cape Cod, in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. Together with the small islands of Tuckernuck and Muskeget, it constitutes the Town of Nantucket, and the conterminous Nantucket County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 10,172. Part of the town is designated the Nantucket CDP, or census-designated place. The region of Surfside on Nantucket is the southernmost settlement in Massachusetts. The name Nantucket is adapted from similar Algonquian names for the island, perhaps meaning faraway land or island or sandy, sterile soil tempting no one.     Not to be confused with Maia Mitchell, Australian actress and singer.Maria Mitchell [pronounced mə-RYE-ə] was an American astronomer, who in 1847 by using a telescope, discovered a comet, which as a result became known as Miss Mitchell's Comet. She won a gold medal prize for her discovery, which was presented to her by King Frederick VI of Denmark. On the medal was inscribed Non Frustra Signorum Obitus Speculamur et Ortus in Latin (taken from Georgics by Virgil . Mitchell was the first American woman to work as a professional astronomer.The third of ten children, she was raised in the Quaker religion, but later adopted Christian Unitarianism.
