2. Natural Bridge Caverns Natural Bridge
Natural Bridge is a geological formation in Rockbridge County, Virginia, comprising a 215-foot-high natural arch with a span of 90 feet . It is situated within a gorge carved from the surrounding mountainous limestone terrain by Cedar Creek, a small tributary of the James River. Consisting of horizontal limestone strata, Natural Bridge is the remains of the roof of a cave or tunnel through which the Cedar Creek once flowed. Natural Bridge has been designated a Virginia Historic Landmark and a National Historic Landmark. Since 2016, the bridge and its surroundings have been managed by the Commonwealth of Virginia as Natural Bridge State Park.

West Virginia is an ideal year-round vacation destination with endless places to visit ranging from beautiful mountain retreats to quaint historic towns. With so many opportunities to enjoy outdoor recreation, the state is a mecca for the active traveler but also a nice place to relax and unwind in a natural setting. Popular activities include hiking, biking, fishing, whitewater rafting, kayaking, rock climbing, zip lining, ATVing. horseback riding and more. Winter activities include downhill and cross country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and ice skating. For history lovers, heritage sites abound throughout the mountains offering glimpses of how the Civil war, colonial life, and early explorers all helped shape American culture. While there are dozens of fun places to explore, here are ten of the “must sees” in West Virginia.

The first stop of our 2017 summer vacation was Natural Bridge State Park in Virginia. We were not disappointed and ended up making a day out of the hiking trails in and around the Natural Bridge Park. Natural Bridge is a Geological Formation in Rockbridge County VA, consisting of a 215 foot high arch which spans approximately 90 feet. The arch still caries traffic on the old Valley Pike or modern day Route 11 which we passed over by accident when we missed the turn into the State Park.

Natural Bridge and the land surrounding it was purchased and owned by Thomas Jefferson from King George III for 20 Shillings in 1774. George Washington was also thought to have visited the Natural Bridge in his youth and was believed to have carved his initials in the wall under the bridge's arch approximately 23 feet off the ground.

When I originally planed the 2017 summer vacation I considered Natural Bridge at first but then scratched it off the list for other sight seeing stops. Later, when we first arrived in Virginia, due to our close proximity to Natural Bridge from the KOA campground we stayed in. The Natural Bridge again was found on the to do list. I am glad we did not pass this wonder of nature by and that we made time to enjoy it splendor and the history that surrounds it. If you are in the area of Rock Bridge County VA I strongly recommend you take the time to stop by and see this Wonderfull place.

Welcome to my first photography vlog. This is my attempt to shoot more of the things that Iâm passionate about (landscapes). Iâm documenting my journey to various locations and starting with a focus on waterfalls in Virginia. If opportunities for other locations arise Iâll include those in this series as well. This episode includes travel to our destination of Big Branch Falls in Virginia. We made a few detours along the way to other scenic spots including a damn of impressive proportions.

Itâs a little longer than I intended, but itâs true to the experience. It points out some spots I thought would have good results and Iâm honest about what wasnât a good photo (so we move on). I describe my equipment and settings for the shots I captured and liked as well as finished versions of those images. Youâll find links to those below. I hope that this inspires you to pursue your passions as well. Remember to stop and enjoy the beauty that you find along the way.
