Jhunjhunu lies in the core of the well known erstwhile Shekhawati province. Jujhar Singh Nehra and Thakur Shardul Singh conquered Jhunjhunu in 1730 from Rohilla Khan, the last Nawab of Jhunjhunu. This is clear from the following poetry, made by the Charan of Shekhawats in the Rajasthani language

Mandawa - Rajasthan - INDIA
Mandawa is a town in Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan in India.Mandawa is situated 190 km off Jaipur in the north.Mandawa is known for its fort and havelis.
The fort town of Mandawa is well connected with the other places in region through a good network of roads.
History :
The City of Mandawa was made a thikana in the mid of 18th century by the Bhojraj Ji Kasubsub clan of Shekhawat Rajputs.
About the origin of this town there have been earlier references to Mandu Jat as founder of the Mandawa village.
He first established a dhani and dug a well here, which was completed on savan badi 5 samvat 1797.
Initially this place was known as ‘Mandu ki dhani’, ‘Mandu ka bas’ or ‘Manduwas’ which changed to ‘Manduwa’,'Mandwa’ and finally ‘Mandawa’.
Havelis :
This town has been referred to as the open art gallery of Rajasthan because the entire Shekhawati region and not just Mandawa is dotted with fascinating mansions(havelis) that have lavishly painted walls.
Sewaram Saraf Haveli:-
This 100-year-old Haveli is famous for its architecture and paintings, Bollywood's Favorite Destination for Movie Shooting, PK, Bajrangi Bhaijan, Mirza Sahibaan and many more.
Ram Pratab Nemani Haveli:-
The Haveli has been recently converted into a Heritage Hotel where one can experience untouched frescos dating back to the 18th century.
Vivaana Culture Hotel is a captivating twin haveli adorned with fascinating paintings. Both the exterior and interior boast of superb and rare artifacts and frescos.
Hanuman Prasad Goenka Haveli:-
This haveli has a painting depicting Indra Dev on an elephant and Lord Shiva on his Nandi bull.
Mohan Lal Saraf Haveli:-
A picture of a Maharaja stroking his moustaches beautifies this haveli.

This haveli is located in the south of town, where the decoration of the outer and inner walls is perhaps the finest in Shekhawati.

Shekawati, the North Indian region of Rajasthan, was once an important trading route to China. The amazing wealth of the majarajas can still be experienced as their former palaces have now been transformed into luxury hotels.The journey through this exotic land begins in Sikar, a place that still brings to mind the splendour of bygone times. The streets and lanes of this small town are always busy and it is as though half the population is making its way through the town. Lorries and camel wagons dominate the streets and the unpredictable nature of Indian traffic is a constant challenge. Havelis, the exquisite homes of the city’s former traders, are architectural gems. The dwelling houses of Sikar’s wealthy traders have retained their former glory and are built of yellow sandstone. The word ‘havelis’ is derived from the Persian language and means ‘encircled square’. The walls protect the building from the searing heat and also uninvited guests. In the 18th century Churu was one of the most important stops along the caravan route. The mighty Poddar Family dominated the supply of provisions to the travelling traders. Due to punitive taxes they moved their business to Ramgarh thus Churu gradually fell into decay but with the arrival of the British the town prospered once again. Each city in the Shekawati region is like something from a movie set and it would not be at all surprising if a film crew suddenly appeared from behind one of the magnificent facades! The splendour of the region’s havelis and royal palaces has turned this journey into an unforgettable adventure. Shekawati is truly a golden step into a lost age.

Rampuria Havelis - Magic cast in stone (Bikaner, Rajasthan)
The most famous cluster of havelies is the Rampuria Group of Havelies, the pride of Bikaner. Situated in narrow lanes in the old city, boost unique architectural marvels of India. Such havelies or residential houses do not exist anywhere in the world. Built by Balujee Chalva under instructions from Rampuria family its carvings show surprising skill.The oldest haveli is perhaps four hundred years old but most of them are hundred years in age or around it. They charm each and everyone who happens to see them and remind them of an era long gone.

Die alten Karawanenwege der Seidenstraße brachten dieser Region im 18. Jahrhundert großen Wohlstand. Dieser sagenhafte Reichtum manifestiert sich im Palast des Maharadschas von Mandawa und einer Reiher sehenswerter Kaufmannshäuser, die in Indien Havelis genannt werden. Wir wohnen im Palast des Maharadschas, der heute als Mandawa Castel Hotel zahlreichen Touristen als Unterkunft dient. Bei einem Rundgang durch das verschlafene Wüstenstädtchen Mandawa lässt sich der einstige Reichtum des Ortes nur erahnen. An den Havelis hat der Zahn der Zeit genagt. Nachkommen dieser ehemals reichen Kaufmannsfamilien leben heute noch in diesen traditionellen Häusern. Oft kann man gegen einen Obolus die Innenhöfe betreten und die Wohnräume besichtigen. Filmen und Fotografieren ist in den meisten Fällen erlaubt.
