Néa Mákri & Rafina - Greece
If you do not want to stay in Athens, Nea Makri is a good alternative.
It is a mondaine touristy little coastal village about 35 minutes by car from Athens and even closer to the international airport.
Rafina lies a bit south of Nea Makri.
It has a port with small fish restaurants serving tasty food.
From Rafina the ferries leave for the Greek islands.

Today I'm going to the beach of Schinias near Marathon. I took the scenic ride from mount Penteli, went to Nea Makri harbour and after that it was time to swim in the blue-green waters of Schinias beach.

Built at the foot of Vermio and Tripotamo River to the crossing, Veria was the second most important city in the years of prosperity of the ancient Macedonians. Indeed, it was the second largest in the region after Aiges, and continued to be robust and powerful city during the Byzantine era (it was the third most important city of the Empire after Istanbul and Thessaloniki). Because of the many Byzantine monuments (now survive more than 50 Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches), formerly referred to as the Little Jerusalem. Today is a modern city, which, however, retains its historic neighborhoods and many of the great monuments. It is located 510 km. North of Athens and 68 km. West of Thessaloniki.

Golden Coast Hotel & Bungalows - Marathon - GREECE
Golden Coast Hotel & Bungalows is a nice place to stay. It is located on the Golden Marathon Bay and famous Marathon, Attica. The distance is around 40 KM from the Athens airport.
If you're a runner, this is a pilgrimage. Marathon Run Museum is an fantastic place and an absolute hidden gem. Archaeological Museum of Marathon has been operating since 1975. The Artifacts from nearby battlefields are also displayed there. Sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods near Nea Makri is very interesting and knowledgeable place.
