It is one of the Residences of the Royal House of Savoy, included in the UNESCO Heritage List in 1997. It received 1,012,033 visitors in 2016. The Palace was designed and built from 1675 by Amedeo di Castellamonte, commissioned by duke Charles Emmanuel II, who needed a base for his hunting expeditions in the heathy hill country north of Turin. The name itself derives from Latin, Venatio Regia meaning Royal Hunt.

The abbey, which for much of its history came under Benedictine rule, is now entrusted to the Rosminians. A special regional law acknowledges it as the Symbolic monument of the Piedmont region. A hunting lodge for a European Court
A place of leisure and hunting, this was the favourite spot of the Savoy family for spectacular parties and solemn marriages, as well as being the residence of Napoleon in the early 19th century.

Filippo Juvarra designed the exceptional architecture for the sovereign, styled on the model of contemporary Central European Residences. For completing the project, also Benedetto Alfieri and other architects of the 1700s lent a hand, while cabinetmakers and carvers, stucco decorators and gilders helped to achieve the final decorative display.
Home to the Furniture Museum since 1919, it holds precious items of furniture, chinoiseries and masterpieces by cabinetmakers and craftsmen coming also from other Savoy Residences.
