Takoma, Washington, D.C., is a neighborhood in Washington, D.C.. It is located in Advisory Neighborhood Commission 4B, in the District's Fourth Ward, within the northwest quadrant. It borders the city of Takoma Park, Maryland. Takoma is a diverse neighborhood, populated mostly by middle-class families. What is the cheapest state to live in?

Theoretically, it is South Dakota. But if it is anywhere near the oil patch, rents rival those in New York and San Francisco.

I don't want to be near an oil patch.

And the oil work brings jobs.

What's another option?

Try North Dakota. It's just as cheap.

And the negative 40 degrees keeps the riff raff out.

Fahrenheit or Celsius?

At that temperature, it's the same difference. But you'd have to pay me to live somewhere that cold.

Texas is an affordable state to live in. McAllen, Texas, along the Rio Grande, is one of the cheapest cities to live in.

Going out for dinner means having American instead of Tex-Mex. And they'd have press 1 for Espanol, press 2 for English.

There aren't a lot of jobs there, and a fair number of their office jobs are telemarketing in English and Spanish. Oklahoma is billed as one of the cheapest states to live in.

Housing is cheap because so few people live there.

Oklahoma City is a major metropolitan area, with over 100,000 people, while Norman, Oklahoma is one of the cheapest cities in the U.S. Those along the Texas border often commute to North Dallas jobs.

I'd rather live in the middle of nowhere.

That's almost a definition for the most affordable places to live, like Nebraska and Idaho.

Nebraska is all farming.

There are colleges, hog farms and railway hubs there, plus insurance companies in Omaha.

Living where Warren Buffet came from isn't a draw for me.

Try Arkansas. It is one of the cheapest states, and the state is second on the drop down list.

Tennessee makes a lot of affordable living lists. Memphis is a big city, too.

Home of Rhythm and Blues isn't bad, and neither is their pork.
