The cities of New York and San Francisco are famous for their costly rental prices and high cost of living. This raises the question of where the most affordable places to rent a home are located. The website GOBankingRates.com compiled data from 2017. Using rental prices on Zillow, the site ranked the 150 most populated cities to find the least expensive ones for renters. Ranking is based on the median prices of one and two-bedroom apartments, as well as single-family residences. These 10 cities are worth checking out if you are a senior living on a fixed income, a fresh graduate, or someone who just wants find a cheaper place to rent or retire early.

Buxton Hall's chef and pitmaster Elliott Moss will be the first to tell you he's not classically trained. In fact, he got his start in the kitchen of a South Carolina Chick-fil-A. After years of chasing his dream of opening up a BBQ restaurant, Moss opened Buxton Hall in Asheville, NC.
You can smell great barbecue long before you walk through the door.
Outside Buxton Hall Barbecue, it’s no different: The air hangs with the faintly smoky aroma of crispy pork. It only intensifies as you enter the brick-walled space, past T-shirts for sale (my favorite: SMOKED WHILE YOU SLEEP). In the open kitchen, pitmaster Elliott Moss stands over a whole pig, picking and chopping hunks of smoked meat. This is hog heaven.
We’re in the midst of a barbecue boom. Old-school joints are getting their due, and new-school smokehouses like Buxton Hall are proudly carrying on the tradition while shaking things up. Here barbecue means local pasture-raised pig (not the usual commodity stuff) smoked 18 hours over oak, cherry, and hickory. The pork is juicy and sweet and melts in your mouth. It’s how Moss learned it from his grandfather growing up in Florence, South Carolina.
The egg-enriched buttermilk mixture makes for an especially crunchy and craggy coating. This recipe is from Buxton Hall, one of the Hot 10, America's Best New Restaurants 2016.

Good ’cue isn’t the only thing that makes the experience. The fried chicken sandwich—the meat smoked before it hits the fryer—was the best version of that now ubiquitous dish I had all year. Mussels, which should have no business in a barbecue joint, were so good I sopped up the smoked tomato sauce with buttermilk hushpuppies.
Sides, so forgettable at other spots, are anything but. Green beans catch drippings beneath the pigs; collards swim with swine bits and cider vinegar; potatoes are smoked, mashed, and topped with hog gravy. A twist on the classics with one thing in common: the flavors of the pig. And that’s what Buxton Hall is all about.
It’s no secret that we’re living in the midst of a bona fide barbecue boom. Old-school joints are finally getting their due, and new-school smokehouses—like Buxton Hall—are proudly carrying on the tradition while shaking things up a little. Here barbecue means local pasture-raised pig (not the usual commodity stuff), smoked 18 hours over a mixture of oak, cherry, and hickory, until it's juicy and sweet—just how chef Elliot Moss learned it from his grandfather in Florence, South Carolina. That said, whole-hog ’cue isn’t the only thing going on in this gigantic dining hall. (If it appears to be the size of a roller rink, that's because it once was one.) The juicy fried chicken sandwich is topped with creamy white barbecue sauce and pimiento cheese and a slice of American cheese. Sides, often forgettable at other barbecue places, allow Moss to flex his creative muscles: green beans cook under the pig, catching all those fatty drippings; potatoes are smoked, then mashed and topped with hog gravy; braised collard greens are swimming with swine bits and a healthy spike of cider vinegar. All these twists on the classics have one thing in common—the flavors of the pig. Ultimately, that's what Buxton Hall is all about.

In July of 2017 we traveled to Smoky Mountains, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, Tennessee
Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a United States National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site that straddles the ridgeline of the Great Smoky Mountains, part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which are a division of the larger Appalachian Mountain chain. The border between Tennessee and North Carolina runs northeast to southwest through the centerline of the park. It is the most visited national park in the United States with over 11.3 million recreational visitors in 2016.
Pigeon Forge is a mountain resort city in Sevier County, Tennessee, located in the southeastern United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 5,875.
Situated just five miles (8 km) north of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Pigeon Forge is a tourist destination that caters primarily to Southern culture and country music fans. The city's attractions include Dollywood, as well as numerous gift shops, outlet malls, amusement rides, and music theaters.
Gatlinburg, a mountain town in eastern Tennessee, is known as a gateway to the roughly 520,000-acre Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Many of its key attractions offer sweeping views of the neighboring park, including the 407-ft. Space Needle observation tower and the Sky Lift, a 2.1-mile aerial cable car that journeys from Downtown to the popular amusement park and ski resort Ober Gatlinburg.

Although the house and land are located in a small farming community, fiber-optic-based high-speed broadband Internet and cable TV service is already available.
The main level of the house includes two family rooms, each with outside entrances. The family room connecting with the kitchen also has a gas heater and a decorative mantle. The house has a large kitchen, measuring 11 by 18 feet with an updated stove, dishwasher, cabinets and countertops. Two large, sliding windows above the sink allow plenty of natural light into the room, while providing impressive views to the outside. Also in the main area, the first bedroom has a very large walk-in closet and a connecting full bathroom. This bathroom has been renovated and is conveniently connected with the kitchen, providing access for guests.
Also convenient from the kitchen is a very large side room that can be used for many purposes as well as the laundry area, complete with washer and dryer hookups. In this part of the house is the second full bathroom, complete with updated cabinets and vanity, and includes a full bathtub. As with the rest of the house, this bathroom has a large window overlooking the scenic property.
Upstairs from the second bathroom is a loft. This space is easily used as a bedroom, office or playroom.
Attached to the house, and accessible from the connecting porch is an original cellar room, great for storage. Above this cellar room is an additional large room that can be used as a bedroom or nearly any other purpose.
Key features of this house are its many windows providing ample natural light, original architectural elements, versatility of the spaces and convenience of modern appliances. The house also has a front and side porch, just right for enjoying the area’s moderate summers.
This property is located in Shady Valley TN, which is a wonderful rural community in the northeast part of the state. This community is located approximately halfway between the towns of Damascus, VA, and Mountain City, TN, with quick access to the cities of Bristol, TN, Elizabethton, TN, and even Boone, NC. The area is rich with natural beauty, nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. Nearby points of interest are the Cherokee National Forest, South Holston and Watauga Lakes, Backbone rock and recreational area, and numerous hiking opportunities including the Appalachian Trail.
Although Shady Valley is a small community, it does have an excellent public school, post office, high-speed broadband and general stores. Additionally, the local community is vibrant with annual events such as the Cranberry Festival.
