Deutsches Eck is the name of a headland in Koblenz, Germany, where the Mosel river joins the Rhine. Named after a local commandry of the Teutonic Order , it became known for a monumental equestrian statue of William I, first German Emperor, erected in 1897 in appreciation of his merits in the unification of Germany. One of many Emperor William monuments raised in the Prussian Rhine Province, it was destroyed in World War II and only the plinth was preserved as a memorial. Following German reunification, a replica of the statue was erected on the pedestal after controversial discussions in 1993. It is today a Koblenz landmark and a popular tourist destination.

5. Edersee Waldeck
The Edersee Dam is a hydroelectric dam spanning the Eder river in northern Hesse, Germany. Constructed between 1908 and 1914, it lies near the small town of Waldeck at the northern edge of the Kellerwald. Breached by Allied bombs during World War II, it was rebuilt during the war, and today generates hydroelectric power and regulates water levels for shipping on the Weser river. At low water in late summers of dry years the remnants of three villages and a bridge across the original river bed submerged when the lake was filled in 1914 can be seen. Descendants of those buried there go to visit the graves of their ancestors.

Ehrenbreitstein Fortress is a fortress in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, on the east bank of the Rhine where it is joined by the Moselle, overlooking the town of Koblenz. Occupying the position of an earlier fortress destroyed by the French in 1801, it was built as the backbone of the regional fortification system, Festung Koblenz, by Prussia between 1817 and 1828 and guarded the middle Rhine region, an area that had been invaded by French troops repeatedly before. The Prussian fortress was never attacked. Since 2002, Ehrenbreitstein has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley.

Written in her native tongue of Yiddish over the course of thirty years, her memoirs were originally intended to be an ethical will for her children and future descendants. Glückel's diaries are the only known pre-modern Yiddish memoirs written by a woman. The Memoirs of Glückel of Hameln provide an intimate portrait of German-Jewish life in the late seventeenth to early eighteenth centuries and have become an important source for historians, philologists, sociologists, literary critics, and linguists.

The Externsteine [ˈɛkstɐnʃtaɪnə] is a distinctive sandstone rock formation located in the Teutoburg Forest, near the town of Horn-Bad Meinberg in the Lippe district of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The formation is a tor consisting of several tall, narrow columns of rock which rise abruptly from the surrounding wooded hills. In a popular tradition going back to an idea proposed to Hermann Hamelmann in 1564, the Externsteine are identified as a sacred site of the pagan Saxons, and the location of the Irminsul idol reportedly destroyed by Charlemagne; there is however no archaeological evidence that would confirm the site's use during the relevant period. Möhnetallsperre Sauerland

De Möhnesee is een kunstmatig meer in de rivier de Möhne. Het meer is ontstaan door de aanleg van de Möhnetalsperre. Deze is gebouwd van 1908 - 1912. Het was de grootste dam in Europa. Het meer is 10,37 M2 km groot en heeft een inhoud van 126.05 miljoen M3. De stuwdam is 650 meter lang, 40.2 meter hoog en 34 meter dik aan de voet.

De stuwdam is in de nacht van 16 op 17 mei 1943 gebombardeerd door de Britten met Lancaster bommenwerpers gedurende operatie Chastise. Ze maakten begruik van rolbommen die over het water ketsten en tegen de wand sloegen. Vervolgens zonken ze en explodeerden ze. De bommen sloegen een gat van 70 metr breed en 20meter hoog in het midden van de dam. In de vloedgolf die hierop volgde vonden 1500 mensen de dood alsmede 50 vliegeniers. De dam is in 5 maanden tijd weer hersteld door dwangarbeiders en krijgsgevangenen en het doel om de industrie in het Ruhrgebied het drink en koelwater te ontnemen is nooit gehaald.

Our 2016 trip around the south of France, staying down in Monaco and crossing into Italy and Switzerland before heading back across to the Ferry again. Then spending a couple of days in Wicklow in the South of Ireland before heading back to Northern Ireland.

Covered just over the 3000 miles in the week in France and another few hundred in Wicklow.

Brilliant trip although the heatwave an 40 degrees was not comfortable !!!!
