Oruro or Uru Uru is a city in Bolivia with a population of 264,683 , about halfway between La Paz and Sucre in the Altiplano, approximately 3,709 meters above sea level. It is Bolivia's fifth-largest city by population, after Santa Cruz de la Sierra, El Alto, La Paz, and Cochabamba. It is the capital of the department of Oruro and the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oruro. Oruro has been subject to cycles of boom and bust owing to its dependence on the mining industry, notably tin, tungsten , silver and copper.

Many different indigenous plants and animals are exclusive to this area; therefore, its continued conservation is of great ecological importance.     Nevado Sajama is an extinct stratovolcano and the highest peak in Bolivia. The mountain is located in the Oruro Department, Sajama Canton. It is situated in Sajama National Park and is a composite volcano consisting of a stratovolcano on top of several lava dome. It is not clear when it erupted last but it may have been during the Pleistocene or Holocene. The mountain is covered by an ice cap and Polylepis tarapacana trees occur up to 5,000 metres height.
