Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of the oldest and the largest national parks in Croatia. In 1979, Plitvice Lakes National Park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage register.The national park was founded in 1949 and is situated in the mountainous karst area of central Croatia, at the border to Bosnia and Herzegovina.     The UNESCO has designated 168 World Heritage sites in all of the 15 sovereign countries of Southern Europe: Albania, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Macedonia, Malta, Montenegro, Portugal, San Marino, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, and Vatican City as well as one site in the British overseas territory of Gibraltar. While Cyprus and Turkey have territory in Southern Europe, they are not included here but in Western Asia. The top two countries by number of World Heritage sites are located in this region: Italy with 53 sites and Spain with 46 sites .
