Richmond is the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia, in the United States.
The site of Richmond had been an important village of the Powhatan Confederacy, and was briefly settled by English colonists from Jamestown in 1609, and in 1610–1611. The present city of Richmond was founded in 1737. It became the capital of the Colony and Dominion of Virginia in 1780. During the Revolutionary War period, several notable events occurred in the city, including Patrick Henry's Give me liberty or give me death speech in 1775 at St. John's Church, and the passage of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom written by Thomas Jefferson. During the American Civil War, Richmond served as the capital of the Confederate States of America. The city entered the 20th century with one of the world's first successful electric streetcar systems, as well as a national hub of African-American commerce and culture, the Jackson Ward neighborhood.
Richmond's economy is primarily driven by law, finance, and government, with federal, state, and local governmental agencies, as well as notable legal and banking firms, located in the downtown area. The city is home to both the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, one of 13 United States courts of appeals, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, one of 12 Federal Reserve Banks. Dominion Resources and MeadWestvaco, Fortune 500 companies, are headquartered in the city, with others in the metropolitan area.
Economy
Law and finance have long been driving forces in the economy.[87] The city is home to both the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, one of 13 United States courts of appeals, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, one of 12 Federal Reserve Banks, as well as offices for international companies such as Genworth Financial, CapitalOne, Philip Morris USA, and numerous other banks and brokerages. Richmond is also home to four of the largest law firms in the United States: Hunton & Williams, McGuireWoods, Williams Mullen, and LeClairRyan. Another law firm with a major Richmond presence is Troutman Sanders, which merged with Richmond-based Mays & Valentine LLP in 2001.
Richmond's revitalized downtown includes the Canal Walk, a new Greater Richmond Convention Center, and expansion on both VCU campuses. A new performing arts center, Richmond CenterStage,[90] opened on September 12, 2009.[91] The complex included a renovation of the Carpenter Center and construction of a new multipurpose hall, community playhouse, and arts education center in parts of the old Thalhimers department store.[92]
Richmond is also fast-becoming known for its food scene, with several restaurants in the Fan, Church Hill, Jackson Ward and elsewhere around the city generating regional and national attention for their fare. Departures magazine named Richmond The Next Great American Food City in August 2014.[93][94] Also in 2014, Southern Living magazine named three Richmond restaurants – Comfort, Heritage and The Roosevelt – among its 100 Best Restaurants in the South,[95] while Metzger Bar & Butchery made its Best New Restaurants: 12 To Watch list.[96] Craft beer and liquor production is also growing in the River City, with twelve micro-breweries in city proper; the oldest is Legend Brewery, founded in 1994. Three distilleries, Reservoir Distillery, Belle Isle Craft Spirits and James River Distillery, were established in 2010, 2013 and 2014, respectively.
Additionally, Richmond is gaining attention from the film and television industry, with several high-profile films shot in the metro region in the past few years, including the major motion picture Lincoln which led to Daniel Day-Lewis's third Oscar, Killing Kennedy with Rob Lowe, airing on the National Geographic Channel and Turn, starring Jamie Bell and airing on AMC. In 2015 Richmond will be the main filming location for the upcoming PBS drama series Mercy Street, which will premiere in Winter 2016. Several organizations, including the Virginia Film Office and the Virginia Production Alliance, along with events like the Richmond International Film Festival and French Film Festival, continue to put draw supporters of film and media to the region.

Hi, I'm Judy Friedberg and I am happy to tell you about my home state of Virginia.
Officially known as the Commonwealth of Virginia, this mid-Atlantic state is
bordered by Washington, DC, Maryland, West Virginia and North Carolina. And,
to the East, the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean border Virginia's Eastern
Shore, another peninsula of Virginia land.
More than eight million people live in Virginia. Our state flower is actually a
flowering tree -- the dogwood. Our state bird is the cardinal.
Much of our state's natural beauty is protected by National Parks. My favorite is
Great Falls Park which highlights a rushing section of the Potomac River, which
flows to the Bay from the mountains in the west. Those mountains are also known
as The Blue Ridge Mountains, due to the coloring of the trees and shadows,
particularly in the early morning and early evening light.
Much of this area is included in Shenandoah National Park. Within the park is a
portion of the beautiful Appalachian Trail -- a rigorous hiking trail which extends
from Georgia to Maine. In the autumn, the leaves are at their most colorful.
Skyline Drive runs through the park. This is a fantastic way to see the beauty of the
mountains and the Shenandoah Valley from the comfort of your car.
The Shenandoah Valley is known for dairy farms and wineries. Virginia's farming
history also includes tobacco and cotton.
Virginia's nicknames refer to its rich history. The Old Dominion refers to its status
as one of the original 13 colonies. Virginia's other nickname is The Mother of
Presidents. Eight U.S. presidents were born here - more than any other state.
Some of their homes are open to the public as historic sites.
Mount Vernon, home of our first President, George Washington, sits high on a bluff
overlooking the Potomac River, not far from Washington, DC.
Monticello, home of our third President and drafter of our Declaration of
Independence, Thomas Jefferson, is located in Charlottesville, Virginia. The
University of Virginia, which Jefferson founded, is nearby.
But, back to some much earlier history...Native people, including the Powhatan,
Algonquin, and Iroquois, were already living in the area long before the English
settlers came. Some say the name Virginia was the settlers' way of honoring Queen
Elizabeth the First of England, who was also known as The Virgin Queen.
You may have heard of the story of Pocahontas? She was a native of the area and a
friend to the English settlers of the colony's first capitol, Jamestown, in 1616.
Williamsburg served as the capitol of the Colony of Virginia from the early 1700s
and was the center of political activity leading to the American Revolution.
Both Jamestown and Williamsburg have active historic centers where you can learn
more about colonial life.
Richmond became the state capital in 1780 and remains so today. In 1861, after ten
states seceded from the United States, Richmond became the capital of the shortlived
Confederate States of America.
After the Civil War ended, and these states re-entered the Union, Richmond
developed into a railroad crossroads for the region. These strong railroads helped
develop trade routes between the middle of the country and the Atlantic Ocean and
led to the founding of Newport News Shipbuilding which continues to produce
battleships and aircraft carriers. Nearby Hampton Roads is the largest naval base on
the east coast.
Virginia is also home to the world's largest office building, The Pentagon,
headquarters of the Defense Department.
Other Virginia coastal attractions are historic lighthouses including Cape Henry,
Fort Monroe and Assateague. Assateague is also the home of the Chincoteague wild
ponies. And, if you visit there perhaps you will order some delicious Chesapeake
Bay blue crab and a beer for your dinner.
Today, media, technology, software, communications, and consulting are the fastest growing sectors of Virginia's economy. The education sector, particularly Virginia's
200-plus colleges and universities, and the government employment sector are also
growth areas. All of this and more, make Virginia the wealthiest of the southern
United States.

Jamestown Settlement | 10K Road Trip Vlog Day 33
We spent the day exploring the historic Jamestown Settlement, along with the Powhatan village, replica ships, and museum.
Tickets are a little confusing. You can buy everything a la carte or you can buy combined tickets to various historic sites and museums. We bought a combined ticket that included Yorktown and Jamestown for about $25. Since we also have a National Parks pass, we got to see the Yorktown battlefield for free (it's included on the pass).

Note: Jamestown Settlement in this video is NOT the actual Jamestown, which is referred to as Historic Jamestowne. That is literally next door, but after some research, we thought Jamestown Settlement would be more fun. Here's a quick difference:
Jamestown Settlement (in this video). It has a well-developed, interactive, and very informative museum explaining the history of the area. It also has a living history museum replica of the settlement, with actors in period dress explaining customs and what life was like. They have three interactive ships that are replicas of the originals that brought the first settlers to the area. And they have another interactive living history museum of the Powhatan Indian village, including friendly actors explaining customs and inviting you to participate.
Historic Jamestowne. This is basically an active archeological site. They're digging up the foundations of the actual Jamestown Fort. There are a few crumbling structures.
So we thought Jamestown Settlement would be more interesting and fun to visit.

Richmond, the capital of Virginia, is among America’s oldest major cities. Patrick Henry, a U.S. Founding Father, famously declared “Give me liberty or give me death” at its St. John's Church in 1775, leading to the Revolutionary War. The White House of the Confederacy, home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis during the Civil War, is now a museum in Court End, a neighborhood known for Federal-style mansions.
Richmond has been called a city of neighborhoods, each one with a distinct look, flavor, and identity. All are recognized by Richmonders as unique neighborhoods, almost as though the city were a collection of several small towns.

Richmond is the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia. It was settled in 1607 by an English settler named Capt. Christopher Newport and Capt. John Smith. The site was previously inhabited by the Powhatan Indians. It was named Richmond after the London suburb of Richmond-upon-Thames by its founder William Byrd II. The settlement did not become a city until 1742, and in the 135 years in between served as little more than a trading post for furs, hides, and tobacco. In 1782 Richmond became the state capital of Virginia. Richmond is one of the oldest American cities. The Shockoe Bottom entertainment area is where slave rebellion leader Gabriel had his head hung from a pike. During the Civil War, it served as the capital of the Confederacy.
Today the 'River City' shares a buzzing food-and-drink scene and an active arts community. The rough-and-tumble James River has also grabbed more of the spotlight, drawing outdoor adventurers to its rapids and trails. Richmond is also an undeniably handsome town that is easy to stroll, full of red-brick row houses, stately drives and leafy parks.
