From the Eastern Alps in Italy, the Stelvio Pass Road connects the Valtellina with Merano and the upper Adige valley. This is the second highest paved mountain road in the Alps and its situated at an altitude of around 1.7 miles (about 2,757 meters) above sea level. The Stelvio Pass is one of the best continuous hairpin routes in the world and its fame came from the presence of 48 hairpin bends and the fact that the road becomes very narrow at some points and it has a couple of very steep inclines. This road is regarded by many car enthusiasts as one of the most challenging roads in the world and it’s scenery is absolutely breathtaking and spectacular.

The Stelvio Pass (Italian: Passo dello Stelvio [passo ˈdello ˈstɛlvjo], Lombard: Giogo dello Stèlvio [dʒɔgo ˈdello ˈstɛlvjo]; German: Stilfser Joch; [ˈʃtɪlfsɐ jɔx]) is a mountain pass in northern Italy, at an elevation of 2,757 m (9,045 ft) above sea level. It is the highest paved mountain pass in the Eastern Alps, and the second highest in the Alps, just 13 m (43 ft) below France's Col de l'Iseran (2,770 m (9,088 ft)).

A Stelvio-hágót minden év utolsó augusztusi hétvégéjén lezárják a motorizált forgalom előtt, ez a nap csak a kerékpárosoké.
2014. augusztusában így mi is nekivágtunk a hágómászásnak Bormioból. Sajnos az időjárás előrejelzések beváltak, mivel esőt ígértek erre a napra, ennek ellenére meglepően sokan vágtak neki a nem kis kihívásnak. A hivatalos adatok szerint Bormióból 1120-an, Pratoból pedig 4014-en indultak el felfelé. Az út kombinálható többféleképpen is, mivel az Umbrailpass is zárva van, így tehát akár a svájci oldalon is le lehet gurulni.

Bormio Travel - Lying immediately south of Passo dello Stelvio, Bormio (1125m) is actually in Lombardy, but acts as an unofficial HQ for the park. It's a popular ski resort, with proximity to some of Italy's highest runs. From October through May, Bormio is best approached from Sondalo in Lombardy, or via Tubre into Switzerland to take the Munt la Schera tunnel to Livigno. Cima Bianca rises just above the town, while nearby the year-round Pista Stelvio drops 1800m over 8km. The town's now very posh thermal springs have been famous since Roman times (Leonardo da Vinci liked a soak). Visit Bormio tourist office for maps, weather forecasts and trekking advice.
