Rapidan is a small unincorporated community in the Virginia counties of Culpeper and Orange, approximately 5 miles northeast of the Town of Orange. The community, located on both sides of the Rapidan River, was established in the late eighteenth century around the Waugh's Ford mill. The Orange and Alexandria Railroad built a line through the town in 1854, a post office was built at the river crossing, and its name was changed to Rapid Ann Station. 1. Cedar Mountain Battlefield Rapidan
The Battle of Cedar Mountain, also known as Slaughter's Mountain or Cedar Run, took place on August 9, 1862, in Culpeper County, Virginia, as part of the American Civil War. Union forces under Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks attacked Confederate forces under Maj. Gen. Thomas J. Stonewall Jackson near Cedar Mountain as the Confederates marched on Culpeper Court House to forestall a Union advance into central Virginia. After nearly being driven from the field in the early part of the battle, a Confederate counterattack broke the Union lines resulting in a Confederate victory. The battle was the first combat of the Northern Virginia Campaign.

Rapidan Camp Tour

Rapidan Camp was President Hoover's weekend retreat. It was a precursor to Camp David in Maryland. It's now part of Shenandoah National Park where you can either hike or take a van for a tour. The tour meets at Big Meadows Byrd Visitor's center.
The van ride has some pretty good shots of the Big Meadows.

Lower Falls on Staunton River in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Graves Mill area in Shenandoah National Park, Madison County, Virginia. This is another short hike in one of my favorite places to visit in Madison County, Virginia. I stop here almost every time I'm in the area. I start my hike at the Graves Mill access area of Shenandoah National Park, a small parking lot along the Rapidan River near Wolftown. The hike begins on the Graves Mill Trail, which runs parallel to the river. I continue this trail until it reaches the confluence of the Rapidan and the Staunton River, which despite the name is more like a creek than a river. It is a short hike upstream following the Staunton River to a nice cascading waterfall with a pool below the falls. As far as I know the falls themselves are not named. There are numerous cascades, waterfalls, and swimming holes all along this creek; however, today I did not have much time and I turned around after viewing the first waterfall. Thanks for watching!
