Ratcliff is an unincorporated community in Houston County in east Texas, United States. Founded in the early 1900s, Ratcliff initially had a population of more than five thousand, with most working at a sawmill operated by the Louisiana and Texas Lumber Company. This Four C Mill used the 45-acre lake that is the heart of Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area as its millpond. The recreation area is located within the Davy Crockett National Forest. Ratcliff is named for an early settler, J.H. Ratcliff, who operated a smaller sawmill, which cut the timber to build the larger Four C Mill.

1. Davy Crockett National Forest Ratcliff
Davy Crockett National Forest is off U.S. Highway 69 lying west of Lufkin, Texas and east of Crockett. It is administered by the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service local headquarters in Lufkin. There are local ranger district offices located in Ratcliff. The forest, part of the Piney Woods ecoregion, covers a total of 160,647 acres in two counties - Houston 94,481 acres and Trinity 67,361 acres . Davy Crockett National Forest, which is bordered on the northeast by the Neches River, includes the 45-acre Ratcliff Lake. The area is pine-hardwood woodlands with flat to gently rolling terrain.

Going North on hwy 259 out of Nacogdoches, Texas

This is heading North on Highway 259 out of Nacogdoches going to Mt. Enterprise. By the way people...Mt Enterprise is nothing more than alittle hole in the road, but it is a class A speed trap. The place is worthy of travelers giving no business to anyone there. Just make sure that you come to a 5 second complete stop at the blinking light. After going thru Mt Enterprise and coming into Henderson, Texas, I went thru a school zone on highway 259 and looked over and noticed that someone put the Texas flag up UPSIDE down. Now if a student did it...this is one thing, but if an adult did it, then that is something else. What has happened to the schools teaching Texas history? What has happened to the schools and parents teaching flag correctness? I am sure that other people saw this before I did, but no one seems to give a damn. I pulled over and called the school district telling them that the Texas flag was upside down and when they called back, I was told that someone in the Henderson Independent School District saw it upside down a day or two before I called, but yet NO ONE corrected this. WHY NOT? I am going back to Nacogdoches in late October and if teh flay is still upside down, I am going to stop and take it down...then cut the rope that they use to put it up. If they dont know which color goes up, then they dont need a flag pole or a rope to put it up.
