Rila is a town in southwestern Bulgaria, in Rila Municipality, part of Kyustendil Province. It is the administrative centre of Rila Municipality, which lies in the southeastern part of Kyustendil Province. The town lies in a mountainous region at the foot of the southwestern Rila Mountains, 20 km from the Rila Monastery, 34 km from Dupnitsa and 65 km from Kyustendil. It is situated on the banks of the Rilska River at the entrance of the Rila Monastery Nature Park.   • 1. Belmeken Dam Rila
    The Belmeken dam is situated in the Rila Mountains in Bulgaria and is the highest reservoir on the Balkan peninsula. There is a pumped-storage plant the Chaira Hydro Power Plant built between the lake and a lower basin. Part of the water stored in the lake is cycled back and forth through the pumped storage turbines, while the lakes outflow drains through tunnels to the Sestrimo Hydro Power Plant.
