Xayabuli is a province of Laos, located in the northwest of the country. Xayabuli Province covers an area of 16,389 square kilometres . The province borders Bokeo Province and Oudomxai Province to the north, Luang Prabang Province and Vientiane Province to the east, and the Thai provinces Loei, Phitsanulok, Uttaradit, Nan and Phayao. Xayabuli is the only Laotian province that is completely to the west of the Mekong River. The province is quite mountainous with the Luang Prabang Range running roughly in a north-south direction and forming a natural border with the Thai highlands. Welcome to Nan Province
Tucked into Thailand’s northeastern corner, Nan is a remote province to be explored for its natural beauty. Nan’s ethnic groups are another highlight and differ significantly from those in other northern provinces. Outside the Mae Nam Nan Valley, the predominant hill tribes are Mien, with smaller numbers of Hmong, while dispersed throughout Nan are four lesser-known groups seldom seen outside this province: the Thai Lü, Mabri, Htin and Khamu.
Nan (Thai: น่าน, pronounced [nâːn]) is one of the northern provinces (changwat) of Thailand. Neighboring provinces are (from south clockwise): Uttaradit, Phrae, and Phayao. To the north and east it borders: Sainyabuli of Laos.

This annual mid-February festival commemorates the nation's living icon. The cerebration, filled with elephant related activities and performances, kicks off with an elephant procession and monk's blessing, followed by the election of the elephant of the year, which leads the second day's parade.

Vassa Festival in Sayaboury - Part 1

Part I of Vassa festival in Sayaboury documentary.

Led by a group of peoples from Luang Prabang Laos, they travelled to Sayaboury Laos to experience the unique celebration of the beginning of Vassa (Wan Kao Pansa). Vassa is also known as Rains Retreat. From July to October, it is the rainy season for most of Southeast Asia. During this period, Buddhist monks normally stay in their temples and avoid any unnecessary travel. However, the retreat has largely been given up by Mahayana Buddhists, as Mahayana Buddhism has typically flourished in regions without a rainy season. For those countries that still practicing this tradition, there is a variation in ceremony from one city to another.

This film is about how peoples in Sayaboury city celebrate their own Vassa Festival. Hope you will enjoy it.

Vassa Festival in Sayaboury - Part 2

This is the second and the last part of Vassa Festival in Sayaboury documentary. The actual ceremony was about 3 to 4 hours long. The event consists of the ceremony announcement, the lighting candles, the rain of Lord Buddha Keo, Kane Kow, Ma Kow, charity, and the traditional Laotian dance. However, this video is about 10 minutes long, and it has all the event highlights.

This video contains the English subtitle for all the events. Most of the information was based on the peoples that I interviewed, and the rest was obtained from several web sites. I have to admit this has been quite a learning process for me to do the translation. In part, it is because my Laotian is getting quite rusty. So it may contain inaccurate info for some, but it should be accurate for the most parts.
