Gas drilling in Russia's Far North threatens Nenets community (Eng)

Tazovskiy, a small town on the Arctic coast. It is the middle of March, but the weather is freezing with temperatures at around minus 30 degrees Celsius. The best way to get around is in a vezdekhod. These vehicles go everywhere.
This weekend the Nenets, the indigenous population of the Yamal region, are meeting for their annual herdsmen festival.
Geologists have found out that the whole of the Yamal region is literally swimming in gas. For Gazprom, the Russian gas monopoly, tapping into those reservoirs has meant a huge investment. Before the first cubic meter of gas could flow from Novozapolyarniy, this huge complex had to be built, hundreds of kilometers north of the Polar Circle. The natural gas is delivered far away to Berlin by long distance pipeline. But their industrial activity may threaten the Nenets' traditional way of life.

Assam is a state of India in the north-eastern region. Its capital is Dispur, located within the municipal area of Guwahati city. Located south of the eastern Himalayas, Assam comprises the Brahmaputra and the Barak river valleys along with the Karbi Anglong and the North Cachar Hills with an area of 30,285 square miles (78,438 km²). Assam is surrounded by six of the other Seven Sister States: Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Meghalaya. Geographically Assam and these states are connected to the rest of India via a narrow strip of land in West Bengal called the Siliguri Corridor or Chicken's Neck. A significant geographical aspect of Assam is that it contains three of six physiographic divisions of India - The Northern Himalayas (Eastern Hills), The Northern Plains (Brahmaputra plain) and Deccan Plateau (Karbi Anglong)
