BUDGET TRAVELS | COURCHSURFING THROUGH PUERTO RICO

Hey there budget travelers!

Here are our main expenses through our stay of Puerto Rico August 17 to August 23 of 2016 ( 6 days total):
*Spirit Airlines Flights Roundtrip leaving from Orlando (including checking in one bag): $329.00
*Airbnb for two nights in Carolina: $101.00 (we rented a small apartment that was walking distance to the beach).

Accomodation: 1st-We stayed with a Couchsurfing host that lived close to the trainstation and provided us with a room upon our two night stay. We were unable to spend a lot of time with him because he worked but he was so nice and we had great conversation. 2nd-We stayed two nights with an amazing host who showed us around the island and even took us to Playa Isabel for a night to stay at her friend's beach house. She was an amazing host that even took us to see La Cueva del Indio. Our last two nights we rented a small studio close to Isla Verde and we had the beach walking distance. It was convient and we did not need any public transportation since everything was so close.

Transportion: Traveling around the island in public transportatio was very cheap and the bus to leave the airport for $0.25. Way cheaper than taking an Uber to leave airport. The other buses to get around were cheap as well and only charged $0.75 and we were able to get around San Juan without any issues. We only used Uber twice and it was fairly new to the area and it costed us $8 to get from San Juan (w/out second host) to Carolina (the studio we rented) for about 10 miles. Our second time using Uber was to get to the aiport from Carolina, it was fairly cheap and we only paid $6 for 3 miles.

Sight seeing: To visit El Morro de Puerto Rico is was $5 for the entrance. To visit the governors house it was free (you do have to leave your identification and fill our some information though). La Cueva del Indio was a $5 entrance fee. The trolley around Old San Juan was free and we were able to get around to avoid walking durind certain times.

Food: One of the most affordable things about Puerto Rico was the food and the drinks. We were ablet to find cheap beer in a hot summer day for $1.25. Fast food was extremely cheap compared to other places in the United States. We were able to cook some food one of our host in gratitude of her hosting us so we were also eating some homemade meals. There is always stores that you can buy food and local stands that also have food for cheap (Pork Guava Skewers for $1.50 for example).

As an end note, Puerto Rico is so beautiful and we are grateful that we were able to go. Everyone was nice and welcoming, at no point did we ever feel unsafe or uncomfortable. We recommend for everyone to visit Puerto Rico as it can be done in a budget. We hope to visit again one day to visit El Yunque and glowing Bio Bay (do not make the mistake to go during a full moon as it is not possible to see this during that time).
