Se si tralasciano le origini romantiche e più o meno leggendarie di Saracena, che si vuole erede di una città chiamata Sestio, la prima notizia che riguarda questo centro risale al 1073, anno in cui fu programmato un incontro, poi non avvenuto, tra Roberto il Guiscardo e il riottoso e ribelle nipote Abelardo, fissato in un Castello sul fiume Garga che non può non riconoscersi nell'attuale Saracena.
La fondazione dell'abitato si deve far ascendere, con molta probabilità, intorno al 900 d.C.,epoca in cui in questa parte della Calabria si installarono nuclei di saraceni, le cui tipologie urbanistiche si riconoscono ancora nell'intricato dedalo di viuzze che compongono il centro storico della cittadina.
